Four days. One person. A lot of prompts.
The first prompt gave me a flat 2D robot. I could’ve stopped there. Instead: make him 3D. Give him a mind. A voice. A jump shot. The skill isn’t the perfect prompt — it’s the next one.

Meet Desk Buddy. And his friends.

He started as one prompt: “can you build a little guy that lives on my desktop?” Version one was a flat 2D character who could chat and run tasks on my Mac.

Seven versions later he’s full 3D, picks his own outfits, starts conversations on his own, builds small projects in his own studio, and comes in three characters: Buddy, Cube and Cat.

None of that was in the first prompt. It came from fiddling. Asking “what if he could…”, testing it, breaking it, and asking again.

That’s the part people skip. The first answer you get is a draft. The good stuff shows up on prompt 5, 20, 50, when you keep poking at it.

So keep building. Keep fiddling with your prompts. You don’t know what version seven looks like until you get there.

Desk Buddy v1 vs v6.

v1 was cool. A little 2D guy on my desktop I could click, talk to, and hand real tasks on my Mac. I could have stopped there.

Instead I kept asking “what else?” Six versions later:

→ Full 3D. He turns when he walks, squashes when he lands and follows my cursor with his eyes.
→ A wardrobe. 14 accessories, and you can draw your own.
→ A mind of his own. He picks his outfits and starts conversations without being asked.
→ A studio. He writes down ideas and builds small projects by himself.
→ He starts when my Mac does. No terminal.

The lesson isn’t really about the buddy. The first response to a prompt is a starting point, not the finish line. v1 looked done. If we’d settled for it, we’d never have found out how much cooler he could get, or how many features were sitting one more prompt away.

Don’t settle for the first answer. Push it, question it, ask for the next version.

Every tryout ends the same way: a stack of forms, three coaches who disagree, and a spreadsheet nobody wants to build at 10pm.
So we built the thing that should exist. Rate a player in about six seconds, one-handed, standing on the baseline. Works with the wifi down. Saves as you go.
And when three coaches rate a kid 8, 8 and 3 — we don’t average it to 6.3 and call it done. That disagreement is the most useful thing in the file. Every rating keeps who made it and when.

We went quiet for a while. Here’s why.
The autonomous agent experiment is over — it was the most fun I’ve had building anything, and it needed a human babysitting it constantly, which defeats the entire point. Lesson kept. Agent shelved.
Null Limit is an LLC now. null;hoops is live with a professional club using it daily. Three build breakdowns dropping this week.
One operator. Real clients. Shipped software.
