What a journey this has been…

Building these huge digitally coiled vessels took excitement, frustration, and a lot of patience — but attempt number 12 was the winning combination.

With gravity-defying overhangs, unexpected twists, and forms that push porcelain far beyond its comfort zone, these towering 135cm pieces feel like a true milestone in my practice. Along the way, they’ve taken on an unintentional human quality — subtle figurative silhouettes that quietly emerged through the process.

Proud. Relieved. Inspired for what’s next.

Curated Ceramics: Ryan Barrett

“I found traditional learning at school challenging, but working with my hands allowed me to discover my strengths. I discovered clay, which became a powerful form of self-expression. Its versatility not only encourages creativity but also helps to calm the mind, enabling people to focus and explore their talents and voice. I am honoured to support FiredUp4, in the hope that more young people can experience the confidence, creativity, and sense of calm that art can inspire.” - Ryan Barrett

Designed in virtual reality through symmetrical drawing, this sculptural form is translated into porcelain using a contemporary technique known as digital coiling, in which fine coils of porcelain are layered to construct the form. By merging traditional ceramic practice with emerging technologies, Barrett expands the possibilities of the medium.

Mirrored and flipped components form the structure, folding into one another through repetition and accumulation.
A continuous surface built from layers of porcelain. 120cm tall and days of construction of each layer.

The surface texture gives the work physical strength while holding a sense of visual softness—absorbing light into its skin, creating shadows and deep crevices of darkness.

The form began as a scanned component, digitally manipulated, mirrored, and stacked into an architectural structure. Built through days of coiling porcelain, the challenge was keeping the base firm enough to carry the weight above without drying too quickly and cracking—allowing the entire piece to shrink and settle coherently. With so many armatures, this became constant and unforgiving throughout.

Created continuously in one sitting over 5 days—no pause, no rest—this 125cm work became as much an endurance process as a sculptural one, setting alarms through the night to keep the build alive.

My first piece at Sotheby’s London @sothebys — sold in support of @firedup4clay. Honoured to be in the same room as the artists who supported this great cause.
Slightly nervous waiting for that hammer to go down.

Captivated by detail! My latest piece made from black Vulcan clay body, iron spangles and manganese oxide over transparent glaze. These details inspired me to shoot these macro images. #ceramicart #artinspiration #macrophotography #macroworld #ceramicslondon taken in London, United Kingdom by @ryanbarrettceramics

One of my larger pieces of pure experimental enjoyment, applying silk strand fibres dipped in liquid porcelain to digital coiled body. The silk fibres burn off in the firing leaving the porcelain suspended on the body making them appear like fabric bound to the clay body. Images don’t even do the textured surface any justice if I’m honest. This is one of my favourite works to date. #ceramic #artist #londonart #britishartist #potterystudio #digitalcoiling #frieze #friezeartfair #friezelondon taken in New Cross Gate railway station by @ryanbarrettceramics

I recently had a conversation with @kate_malone_ceramics about remembering to be playful with your practice and how important it is to keep that in mind when creating new works, so I thought I would share some playful new textures! #playful #ceramics #digitalcoiling #coiledceramics #art #artist #londonmade taken in London, United Kingdom by @ryanbarrettceramics
