Recently my mother was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Aphasia or PPA (the same dementia that actor Bruce Willis has). This type of dementia specifically affects the language part of the brain, and it will get progressively worse over time. If you know my mom, then you know her to be a “talker”… and she still is! However, her ability to process and understand what others are saying, as well as communicating a story cohesively, is now very challenging for her. Talking with her right now is a bit like trying to solve a puzzle, but with some prompts and a little bit of charades, we eventually get there.

Amidst these communication challenges, she is trying new things! She’s discovering the simple pleasures of coloring (birds and flowers are her favorites), going for walks, looking at picture books about cats, and Jr. Whoppers at Burger King. Soon we’ll also try simple puzzles. She still has her favorite hobbies, however, like watching the news, and singing along with Elvis and Springsteen music while she dances in the kitchen. She can no longer read books but enjoys short notes and especially loves greeting cards. If you send her one, she will proudly display it on the piano and show it off to anyone who drops by!

As a family, we are so grateful to the many people who have reached out to my father in the last few weeks. The kind words, support, meals, and gestures of compassion have meant the world to us as we navigate life’s twists and turns as a family. Thank you! by @ryanbergey
