4 building blocks every drummer needs, even when you’re a pro.

You can play for years and still be working on the same basics. The fills, comping, and solos you love are built from a small set of strokes, and the better you control them, the more effortless everything sounds.

Most of what we play comes from four things:

1. Singles. The foundation. Even strokes, even time.

2. Doubles. Two strokes per hand. This is where your stick control gets tested.

3. Flams. A soft grace note into a louder accent. It’s what gives a phrase its shape.

4. Closed roll. A sustained sound made from rapid strokes. It’s how you control dynamics.

The full list of 40 standard rudiments is built from these, so the basics never really go away. Pros don’t skip them. They just play them with more control.

Pick one, play it for five minutes today, and listen back. Save this for your next practice session. 🥁 by @ryandongofficial

For a long time I thought better practice meant more practice. More hours, more random stuff, more noodling. It wasn’t working. What changed things was a few simple shifts:

1. Focus on one thing. Pick one target for the session, like one fill shape, one tune, or one bar of a solo. Multitasking across ten things means you improve at none of them.

2. Practice vs. playing. Playing is running through what you already know. Practice is slowing down, isolating the weak spot, and repeating it on purpose until it’s easy. Most of us spend too much time playing and not enough time practicing.

3. 30-minute chunks beat 3-hour marathons. Short, focused blocks keep your attention sharp. Three hours of half-focus usually gives you fatigue and bad habits. Two or three focused 30-minute sessions in a day will move you further.

Try it this week: one target, one 30-minute block, and a clear idea of what “better” sounds like by the end.

Save this for your next practice session. 🥁 by @ryandongofficial

The #1 reason you freeze up mid solo 👇

It’s usually not your technique. It’s your head.

When you freeze, your mind is racing. You’re thinking about the next phrase, whether the band is listening, whether you’re about to mess up. By the time you’ve thought about all of that, the moment is gone.

The fix isn’t to think faster. It’s to slow your head down and play with calm, assertive intent.

Calm doesn’t mean passive. It means you know what you’re doing for the next two bars, even if you don’t know the whole solo yet.

Here’s what I’d focus on:

1. Breathe before you start. A slow breath resets your tempo and your nerves at the same time.

2. Commit to one idea at a time. Play the phrase you chose all the way through, instead of jumping to the next one.

3. Let silence work for you. You don’t have to fill every bar. A rest that’s played on purpose sounds confident.
Freezing is a mindset problem you can train. Start practicing solos with the same calm you’d bring to a gig, not like a test. by @ryandongofficial
