I received my undergrad degree about four months ago. One of the things I was most excited for after graduation was having more time to dedicate to music. In my mind, the most logical way to do that was to see live music. Unfortunately, going to concerts has become less feasible these days. As someone trying to navigate adulthood, it can be difficult to justify these types of expenses. Luckily, living in the digital age gives me access to resources that allow me to dive deeper into my favorite artists beyond just listening to their music. As much as I feel a prisoner to the screen, there’s a handful of pros to being a music lover on social media these days. Through platforms like NTS, Bandcamp, and even Instagram I’ve been able to deepen my mastery of music discovery even further.

Part of my resolution to spend more time with music was to take a stab at writing about it. It came to me today, what better way to start this log with what I’ve been listening to recently. I spent a lot of my time with electronic and experimental music earlier this summer. As much as that fulfilled an itch in my brain, I realized I was missing the fundamentals of what got me into music. That being guitar music. There seems to be a slacker-rock revival and I have found myself right-smack dab in the middle of it. Just for the record I am not complaining about this by any means. In this entry I have chosen three different indie-rock albums, released in the last five years, that have both re-shaped and reinforced my passion for music. Hope you enjoy.

My Heart Is Room With No Cameras In It by Victoryland

Boy oh boy does this album do it for me. If I could recommend anyone right now a piece of music to listen to it would be this album in full. On my first listen, my idea of what music could be was deconstructed and then re-constructed all over again. I understand that might be a very strong statement but I really feel it. The Brooklyn-based band creates a high level of energy right off the bat with their intro, “Here I Stand,” but instead of loosing it like a lot of other albums do, that energy is equally sustained for the entire 35 minutes. my december listens have been too good to not share:
1. Africa by Amanaz: this album will always be a favorite. great music. fun music even. transports me back to the summa.
2. Here, There and Everywhere by The Beatles: favorite song of all time by the best bugs to ever live. revolver supremacy!
3. Trains Across The Sea by Silver Jews: feel like this song always finds its way on my playlist. lyrics are great to sing along with. reminds me of home and my friends. very Stephen malkmus esq also which is great!
4. Krumville by Onethrix Point Never: found this one recently actually. no one does it like Daniel Lopatin. such a crazy mind and artist. his new stuff off of ‘Again’ is great and highly recommended if you want your ears to be blown away. krumville reminds me of why I love music so much.
5. Guess I’m Dumb by Glenn Campbell: Oh what a song!!! Might be my top out of this selection. I think Campbell has one of the most beautiful voices and I love the honesty of this song. Also the background vocals on this track are addicting and haunting in such a good way. Witchita Lineman will always be one of the best songs of all time.
7. Diplomat’s Son by Vampire Weekend: vampire weekend was the first band I can remember that I actually got into. I found them in elementary school from their performance on SNL where they performed ‘Unbelievers’ and ‘Diane Young’ I think I like this song so much just because Koeing’s voice reminds me of being young and happy and excited by music.
8. Sleepwalking by Modest Mouse: not much to say here. Modest Mouse supremacy!!! This song takes me back to summer and having no worries. just a nice song. by @ryanenjoysmusic
