I’m unfortunately back.

The Warner Bros sale to Netflix is a disappointing shock, but not a surprise. It’s the clearest sign yet that the old studio system is collapsing into a handful of giant platforms, and that the traditional idea of “being chosen” by a gatekeeper is over—if it ever really existed. The “gatekeepers” have always been a closed circuit of people who know each other, hire each other, and vouch for people who look, think, and move like them.

That’s bad news if your dream depends on one of a few corporations or a handful of connected insiders saving you. It’s good news if you’re ready to build something of your own. Because if the big players are all‑in on IP farms and algorithms, then the space they’re abandoning is exactly where real cinema has always lived: in subcultures, in weird little rooms, in communities that show up for each other.

Stop worshipping the fantasy of fame, money, and a golden ticket to Sundance. Start building a parallel industry with your friends. Make films that are personal, accessible, brave. Turn every screening into an event. Use living rooms, bars, warehouses, galleries, church basements, parking lots. When someone tells you “that’s not how it’s typically done”, tell them to go fuck themselves.

We don’t make “content.” We make cinema. And if we make it out of obsession, passion, and love for the medium, it will cut through the noise because in a world of interchangeable content, real cinema is the one thing they can’t fake. by @ryanjsloan
