Want to get better at sculpting faces?

This exercise from my sculpting class is quite useful. Match skull features and landmarks to a scanned face and really study how they exist in 3d space.

I kept the mustache for my wife… She just got back from two weeks in India, and I thought it would ease her transition back to the states…

… She made me shave.

Anyhoo, I started the sculpt in the first ZBrush stream I did just playing with gesture. I hung some anatomy on it and, well, I think it’s gonna turn into quite the romantic piece.

Going LIVE tomorrow for the first time...

... on Maxon's ZBrush channel. Yeah! Finally got invited to stream live so I get to hang with the cool kids now! The Transveral portion of the Trapezius was one of the milestones for me. It’s when I learned about how complicated one muscle can be… and how important muscle fibers are.

What are the other portions called? Anyone remember from class?

An exercise from digital figure sculpting class coming up! Blocking in the model from a simple sphere. Yeah!

This technique mirrors something we do in clay as well by creating a sort of simplified puppet with very basic planes.

What is structural massing? I explain it in my upcoming Digital Figure Sculpting class but this reel is a little snippet of how you need to go from volume to structure.

But... big but, here... this goes well beyond me. It's old knowledge. I just heard the legendary @stevenassael phrase it in the most amazing way possible. Hope he doesn't mind me sharing it and if you get a chance to take a class with him... do it! He's got something with @sicily_artist_retreats in November.

Steven was talking about how we draw the curve in the beginning... not the straight. He said, if you look up at the moon it's round. Almost perfectly round. Now, if you hop into a spacecraft and start heading there you might see that it's a bit oblong. As you get closer you might see that there is more volume in the bottom right... and then as you get even closer you might start to see some straights lines between craters until you are standing on the surface and all you see is the flat, straight horizon...

I'm sure I only comprehend 10% of what Steven is actually saying but I interpret it to mean you go between looking at the curves of the volumes, looking at the straights of structure and then go back to put in the volume of those structures and then go back to straights.... then volumes...

Such a pleasure to be in a class where we discuss Aristotelian and Platonic form and the importance of convexity... I want to move back to the east coast sooooooo bad...... But my kids are now Texas band geeks...

We've been lied to! 😮 The midline is more than just a gesture line! In this anatomy explainer I break down how to locate it, why it matters, and how to use it to lock in gesture, twist, and believable form.

Most artists guess at the centerline and their figures go flat. Once you can trace the midline through the torso, everything downstream — the pit of the neck, the sternum, the navel, the pelvic tilt — falls into place. This is one of the core ideas I teach inside my anatomy program.
