Ryan is an improviser, actor, writer, sound designer, and graduate from UVic’s Phoenix Theatre program. You may have seen him perform improv with SNAP! Theatre, Paper Street Theatre, OK, DOPE, and The Bakery, or his self-produced solo improv show ‘TOO BAD’.

Jenny (they/them) is an artist from the lands of the Lekwungen speaking peoples. They are thrilled to be back with the GVSF for another year. After playing the most coveted role of Peter in R+J, they hope that audiences will once again be moved to tears in the true performing of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Jenny has a BFA in Theatre Performance, a huge ass (head), and a fear of lions. Enjoy the show!

Ryan is joining this wonderful cast and crew for his second production with GVSF, and he
couldn’t be happier to be traipsing through the familiar woods of Athens again. Since graduating from the University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre Program in 2022, Ryan has been an active part of the Victoria theatre and improv scene. A few of his recent credits include The Hawk Lover (Bragi Theatre) at The Belfry’s BMO studio, High Moon: A Werewolf Western (31 Iguanas) at Heritage Acres, Sisters (Theatre Inconnu), Absinthe, Bourbon, Vodka, and Sake (Bema Productions), and the political farce Ducks (Handmade Ivy) at last year’s Victoria Fringe festival. Ryan has also previously played Dogberry in the GVSF’s production of Much Ado About Nothing in 2024. He very much hopes that you enjoy the show.

Carly Young is gleaming with excitement to be joining the cast of faeries and mechanicals for A Midsummer Night’s Dream! They are a performer and costume designer, creating on the traditional Lekwungen and Songhees territories. As someone who loves to express their passion through physical theatre, you can often find her parallel to the floor or upside down in some way or another. When they’re not clowning around on stage (or anywhere really) you can find Carly breaking the laws of reality through experimental costuming with nothing but hot glue, glitter and a prayer. Her other credits include: GVSF’s ‘A Midsummer Nightmare’ and Alectoria’s Award winning fringe show ‘ Origins of the Coast’

You'll have seen this guy in other Bragi Theatre projects! Welcome back to our sound designer and performer Ryan!

Ryan Kniel is an actor, improviser, designer, and playwright. He is a 2022 graduate of the UVic Phoenix Theatre program, and has been creating, performing, and designing theatre all over Victoria since. He has appeared in High Moon (31 Iguanas), Ducks (Victoria Fringe), Much Ado About Nothing (Greater Victoria Shakespeare Festival), Sisters (Theatre Inconnu), Game:Play (Secret Shark Collective at the Belfry Theatre), Bedsprings (Bragi Theatre), and Absinthe, Bourbon, Vodka, and Sake (Bema Productions). Ryan also received an award for “Outstanding Performance” at the Between Words One Act Play festival in 2023. As a sound designer, Ryan has worked on Hidden People (Hapax), Bacon (Theatre Inconnu), Abandoned (Bockman Theatrics), and the podcast Hey There, Mr. Moon (Periluna Collective.)

A werewolf in love with a king. A girl infatuated with her own reflection. A beautiful corpse in a cottage in the woods. Based on the Medieval poems of Marie de France, The Hawk Lover is composed of a series of widely varying vignettes about desire, death, and magic. Using dance, song, theatre, and puppetry, the Hawk Lover will charm, seduce, and frighten you.

August marks the arrival of the Victoria Fringe Festival, and with it, a season of vibrant storytelling. I’m honoured to be at the helm of not one, but two original works: Shade Apparel by Alan Segal, presented by Imbroglio Theatre, and Ducks by David Heyman, brought to the stage by Handmade Ivy Stage and Screen. It’s a thrilling journey of creation, collaboration, and bold new voices.

SHADE APPAREL:
Danver, playwright and loner, realizes he has questions he never knew he had. Where does someone go for ideas or help? And truth? He is not ready for the answer. Shade Apparel is about wanting to know more and not knowing where to find anything. Showdates: Aug. 21, 23, 24, 29, 30 at Wood Hall (Conservatory of Music in Victoria,) 900 Johnson St.

DUCKS:
A slick political communications professional about to leave for the job of a lifetime has thirty minutes to retrieve and destroy every copy of an invitation inadvertently sent out in his name that will destroy his career if the media or opposition groups find out. It’s time to meet the cast of TOO BAD!

First up is the indomitable Ciaran Volke - Ciaran is the director and technical designer of the show; shaping the flow, transition, and feel of the performance from behind the scenes. He’ll be in the booth during the show, breathing life into the world of Cowboy Bebop and collaborating with Ryan through improvised lights, sound effects, and music.

Performing the show will be Ryan Kniel (me)! Ryan will be using his knowledge of pacing, plot and character archetypes found within Cowboy Bebop, as well as other Western, Noir, and Sci-fi properties to improvise completely unique scenes, stories, and moments in life for every performance. He’ll be taking inspiration for scenes both from audience suggestion and interaction, as well as the rich variety of music played by Ciaran.

Hey there, space cowboys.

I am self producing another show at the Intrepid Studio Theatre - this time it's a one-man improv show called TOO BAD!

The show takes place in the world of Cowboy Bebop, the 1997 anime created by Sunrise Studio Inc, and is inspired by the neo-noir jazz soundtrack from Yoko Kanno and The Seat Belts.
