Smoke and Mirrors by @puscifer Five years after Amarillo, @philly_michaels and I collaborate again. Shot in #syracuse in December of 2017, #oakwoodcemetery #armorysquare #thepennypub #franklinsquare and #innerharbor by #destinyusa paint the backdrops to this story of revenge. The items in the box were cathartically burned in one take; the book burning is an homage to #memento by @christophernolann. A #sony #a7sii was used with a custom picture profile set to record a 95% desaturated image and achieve a #monochromatic look. Some color was pulled back in #davinciresolve giving a feeling of old film. Apogee lenses by @richardgaleopticsuk were used, primarily the 38mm. The handheld shots give realism, but a #dji #roninm was used for the final shot which was reversed to 'snap on' the focus of the watch hands. Special thanks to Rhonda from #dakotawatch at Destiny, who helped us 'break' the watch to click the same second continuously, and Dan from @seaculturebrand who graciously punched Phil while passing through Armory Square. Amarillo by @gorillaz When @philly_michaels and I filmed this in August of 2012, we didn't realize that accidents can sometimes lead to greatness. We had as abstract an idea of what we wanted to achieve as any number of the flared images in the final piece, yet as the years go on I find more symbolism in this film that doesn't seem to require justification. A man in a cage of his own design who cannot touch the sun. There is no such thing as a coincidence. The truly awesome bay scene was shot at the @baysidemarina by @nycslewis who pushed the Canon T3i and Nikon AI prime lenses to their max. Ryan @manwiththecam Wright even came out from Philly to operate the #flycam and achieve the dope windshield shot - HANDHELD. Talk about a cyborg. I have sincere gratitude for @kristen_karalis and @jackiecheeks who believed in us before we had anything to show for it. This was removed a few months after it was posted on YouTube, but a year later it was allowed back online. Could've been automatic, but @damonalbarn if you saw this and approved of it, know that it meant the world to our crew... I Have A Rose by @jeddavis An all time favorite of mine. Shot in August of 2010 on a Canon HV20 and Nikon 50mm f/1.8 via Twoneil 35mm DOF adapter. Being MiniDV, it was a clunky setup compared to today's sleek DSLR's and required a ton of light to produce an image on the focusing screen of the depth of field adapter. However, I'm glad I didn't have access to a DSLR or mirrorless camera at the time, as the images the HV20 rig made have a distinct quality to them that lies somewhere between film and digital in a niche world of independent cinema that exited for a short time in the early aughts. The man behind the mask is @beegee001 who conveyed the emotion of the character through body language and only a few glints of eye. I've always been impressed by that. @e.horender co-starred as the dream girl with the rose. Thanks sis, you're clutch. And Jed Davis himself made the trip out to Edmeston to make a cameo as the driver. Jed's great honor of artistic freedom on this project shaped my philosophy on collaborative art and the beauty that trust can create. by @ryanmechan
