GW⚠️
September 4, 2021. The scariest, most traumatic, life altering moment of my entire life. At the beginning of this school year, I was filled with so much hope, drive, and determination going into it as a senior. I had an elaborate plan with every detail to ensure I could achieve any and everything I wanted, but that’s not what God had in mind. Back in early September, I became a victim to gun violence. A bullet went into my ankle, hitting the ending tip of my heel bone, and stopping just centimeters before my Achilles’ tendon. Once I found safety, I remember the first thing I said to the lady tending to me. I asked repeatedly, “Can I dance?” “Will I be able to dance?” “I have to dance.” In that moment, the main emotion that was flooding my mind was instant regret. I regretted how much I’d taken dance for granted in the previous years of my life. I knew I couldn’t live without dance but I still managed to find a way to make it second priority to things that were meaningless to my future goals and dreams. And I did it out of fear. I was so fearful of all the things I couldn’t control that I pushed away the one thing that mattered so much. Once I realized that dance could’ve been taken away from me for good, I wanted nothing more than to take back the times I made my passion a second priority.
I was very lucky to have minimal damage. The doctor assured me I’d be back dancing like it never happened. I started walking in a little over a month, started my physical therapy, and was back to dance at the start of this year. I will forever thank God for sparing my life and my gift, my family for the love, support, and guidance mentally and physically, and my friends for sticking around to bring me good times and laughs.
And to dance, I have never found a love much greater. Knowing what reality could be like without, seemed like a life I couldn’t live through. You are the outlet to my deepest thoughts, emotions, and secrets. I choose to bare my soul and be the most vulnerable when you move through me. And with that comes the most beautiful, magical creations. Fear has never been the obstacle that stood between my artistry from that day and forever forward.
Thank you. by @ryann_simone
