For my birthday I wanted to share some of the ways I intentionally cultivate peace:

1. Giving - my time, resources, encouragement, advocacy, and mentorship. It expands empathy and reminds me I’m part of something bigger. 💗

2. Growing - honest self-assessment, studying, emotional regulation, and actually implementing what I learn. 🤓

3. Gratitude - I don’t wonder what’s missing, I magnetize what’s meaningful 🧲

4. Self-care - movement, nature, nourishing food, quality sleep, intimacy, skincare… 💆‍♀️

5. Spirituality - I don’t adhere to religion, but I do pray and follow the teachings of compassion, like those of Jesus. 🙏🏼

6. Challenge - doing hard things has been one of the greatest ways I’ve developed confidence and discovered & tested my values. 🤨

7. Boundaries - the more clearly you know your values, the easier it becomes to protect your peace. 👏🏼

8. Animals - snuggle them, talk to them, care for them. 🐕🐈🐓

9. Laughter - Every.. Single. Day. (I receive a lot of Jim Carrey and Stefon GIFs 🤭)

10. Travel - as Mark Twain wrote, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” ✈️

11. Play - board games, card games, pickleball, dodgeball… I’ll be the most enthusiastic worst athlete on your team!😆

12. Connection - My heart family is a safe space for all in it because we build trust & encourage authenticity. Let’s exchange depth AND small talk 💖

13. Accountability - I own my part & what I can control and navigate the rest with diligence & curiosity 🔥

As a proud American, I believe in what this country stood for at its inception, and that the love of power has led it astray today.

Today I’d like to remind others: nobody owns “patriotism”.

In my house, patriotism begins with gratitude for all our people, accountability for our past, present, & future— and the tireless work of building infrastructure & economy, protecting from afar, and nurturing community.

Cheers to respect for our lands, the protection of equality & liberties, and contributing to a healthy, happy society.

250 years… not because of politicians or oligarchs… because of ordinary people investing themselves in community. Don’t forget that.

🌋 I have seen lava flowing a few times in my life, and each experience has felt just as magical as the last.

None of my kiddos have seen lava, and two of them are in Hawaii for their first time! When I told my girls there was no guarantee we’d see lava, I reminded them that the drive to Kīlauea was worth it regardless. Yesterday was the only day we could fit in the visit so we checked the @hawaiivolcanoesnps eruption updates all day… nothing.

Then, just before we arrived, Kīlauea erupted a fountain of lava hundreds of feet tall!! 🌋

For nearly 20 minutes, we stood in awe of this rare spectacle before it stopped. Then a rainbow stretched across the caldera 🌈 WHAT!?

This moment was a gift. Witnessing the Earth alive in that moment is something we’ll never forget.

Book the ticket. Go see this beautiful world. ❤️🌋🌈

It’s been 6 years since my mom took her life. And after feeling deeply this year for the loss of my father figure George, I couldn’t ignore what started to surface regarding my mom.

Last year I had the opportunity to stop by the spot in Oregon that my mom had a dreamy photo taken of her.

I think about the irony of her dreamy photo: the warmth, the carefree toes in the foam, the kite fluttering above her feminine floral silhouette. I wonder if this was an authentic moment of joy for her.

My mom was dating a local photographer, whom she quickly married and then divorced hardly a year later, because she assaulted him and ended up in jail… that sinks in and I shake my head. Because, of course.

Today, I am another year healed.
Another year of confirming what built me.
Another year of accepting that I was never going to influence her for the better.
Another year of wondering when the mental health conversation will shift to highlighting the damage often caused to others, by others, because of their mental health.

This theme seems to shine as I write my book. And maybe it will add something meaningful to that convo. We’ll see.

In the meantime, I hope she’s free of her chains, wherever that may be. 🙏🏼 by @ryannacook
