Back from Portugal late last night/this morning. A deeply satisfying trip made possible by @pinko_joe (Chris Sperandio) and @pedrovieiradmoura (Pedro Moura) in support of Sperandio’s exhibition of satirical, political art held in the town of Óbidos at the Museo Abílio de Mattos e Silva. I enjoyed spending time with these two! Thanks also to @foliofestival for hosting this exhibition within an international literary festival and to @oaklandu for helping me attend and participate in its public programming. I am grateful for such opportunities to engage outside of the US. The dialogue is essential. taken in Óbidos, Portugal by @ryanstandfest

Yesterday afternoon, I was at the Museo Abílio de Mattos e Silva in Óbidos, Portugal, participating in a lively public discussion in support of the exhibition “Retaliate First! Christopher Sperandio’s Political Art.” The talk, “Cartoons and Politics: Thick Pencils Against Thin Skin, was between Sperandio, curator Pedro Moura, and myself. The catalog for the exhibition was published by Rotland Press, and the entire affair is part of the Folio International Literary Festival held annually in Óbidos. It was a great, engaged audience, as we parsed out the socio-political fate of civilization.

Had a terrific day @arcocentrodearte art school in Lisbon, with @pinko_joe and @pedrovieiradmoura and a super group of engaged students. We talked comics, politics, and life as artists/academics in the US. Bonus: the school cafe serves wine at lunch. The campus was originally a public marketplace in the 1930s, then converted into a school. taken in Ar.Co - Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual by @ryanstandfest

Day one in the fortified medieval town of Óbidos, Portugal. A few images from my brief wandering.

Once home to the Celts, Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths, and the Moors, who built the original fortifications. The city was taken from the Moors during the reign of the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, in 1148. The 1755 earthquake caused damage to the village walls, a few churches, and many buildings, and resulted in the loss of architecture of Arab and Medieval inspiration. taken in Óbidos, Portugal by @ryanstandfest

Thrilled to be in Óbidos, Portugal to support an exhibition of Christopher Sperandio’s work at the Museo Abílio de Mattos e Silva. The exhibition has been organized by Pedro Moura as part of Flexágono, a survey of comics, cartoons and animation within the Folio International Literary Festival held annually in Óbidos. Rotland Press published the catalog (which is still available for purchase from the Rotland webshop, and ships mid-October).

Came across the “Escultura do Gato”located on Avenida do Mar in Foz do Arelho, Portugal. Behind it is the Atlantic Ocean.

Titled “Still Life with Pomegranates” and carved from limestone, this work was created in 1998 by Israeli sculptors Varda Guivooly and Ilan Gelber and in addition to a window featuring a cat, it originally had a table adorned with a plate of pomegranates along with two stone benches. The benches were stolen, and the table is currently in municipal storage due to its poor condition. Also made of limestone, the table had suffered significant wear from the sea air’s humidity. The cat has survived, however. taken in Foz Do Arelho - Lagoa De Óbidos by @ryanstandfest

Lovely day spent in Lisbon and Almada, Portugal. I’m here to participate in the programming for an exhibition of work by @pinko_joe opening this week in the medieval town of Óbidos, and then deliver a lecture at ArCo - Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual, in Lisbon. My first time visiting here. Touring the winding, hilly streets is truly satisfying. Fell in love with a nighttime vision (last image) of the famous tinned fish shop Comur (Fábrica de Conservas da Murtosa) that was founded in 1942. taken in Lisbon, Portugal by @ryanstandfest

While staying in Fort Greene Brooklyn since the start of July, I began this series of sketchbook drawings. What was a straightforward exercise in taking note of streetside and sidewalk structures, took on a life of its own as I elaborated on my observations to stitch together a landscape.

Starting with the most recent, here is the series so far in reverse chronological order:

1) Adelphi St. / 8.6.26
2) Clermont Ave. / 7.30.26
3) Flushing Ave. / 7.24.26
4) Carlton Ave. / 7.23.26

Marvelous surprise sighting this afternoon: a viewing of the complete original artwork for the magnificent graphic novel “Soft City” (completed between 1969-1975), by the Norwegian Pop artist Hariton Pushwagner (1940-2018). All of the pages were installed at the @newmuseum for the exhibition “New Humans: Memories of the Future.” The hairs stood up on my arms in excitement, when I turned a corner to see this masterpiece. taken in New Museum by @ryanstandfest

Today, a visit to Dia: Beacon— Absolute love for this work by German artist Imi Knoebel, “Raum 19,” 1968. Fiberboard and wood; 77 parts.

Dia notes: “Imi Knoebel’s practice often centers on spatial relations in addition to the fundamentals of painting and sculpture, preoccupations he developed during his education at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf studying under Joseph Beuys. In Raum 19 (Room 19, 1968), Knoebel reduces the core elements of a traditional artistic practice—stretchers, picture frames, and various planar surfaces—to distill the essence of form, material, space, support, and surface. Raum 19 can be variously arranged, depending on the context; since no fixed set of relationships binds the components, the work can expand to an environmental scale. Alternatively, it may be densely compacted as it would be in storage. As such, the form of the work becomes an event, contingent on presentation and staging.”

Imi Knoebel was born in Dessau, Germany, in 1940. He lives and works in Düsseldorf. taken in Dia:Beacon by @ryanstandfest
