GOOI!!!

Join me at the GOOI ceramics featival in Swellendam this weekend!

I am giving a lecture about ceramics and education called “teaching ceramics from ages 3 to 90”

This lecture is based on my own experience as well as research based on education and developmental stages. I will also speak about the skill share programme I am co-facilitating alongside my team at Ceramics Western Cape.

Oh… and… join me in the GREAT POTTERY SHOW DOWN! South African edition!

Fritzy goes to Therapy
Walford china white clay mixed with cottonwool, recycled clay, underglaze, clear glaze

It’s been a little quiet on here… but behind the scenes, a lot has been happening! Last year, Fritzy had their moment in the spotlight at the Clay Awards hosted by @rust_en_vredegallery

They’ve since moved into their new home — I miss them dearly, but I know they’re in good hands (and still in therapy).

This was such an exciting (and slightly overwhelming) step in my ceramic journey. I’ll be sharing more pieces from exhibitions throughout the year — so stay tuned!

“Fritzy needs a haircut”

Walford china white, dog hair soaked in porcelain slip, underglaze, clear glaze.

Fritzy is feral, fabulous, and in desperate need of a trim. This wild creature hasn’t seen a brush since 2020 ( and how could he with all that hair covering his eyes?)

With claws out and teeth bared- Fritzy channels the raw, unkempt spirit of a creature who refuses to be tamed….or groomed.

This sculpture explores the tension between wildness and control, cuteness and menace, and maybe even a touch of lockdown hair trauma. The texture of his unkept hair is made from dog hair mixed in porcelain slip- immortalising a dog who always needs a good trim.

Fortunately Fritzy is going to a new home where they will take better care of his hair- However you can come see him at @6spinstreet until the 7th of August!

"Fritzy sees a ghost"
2021

Fritzy is alive! I made them using a porcelain clay and coloured the little bugger in a black under glaze wash, and golden yellow under glaze for the teeth and claws.

You can't see it in the picture, but Fritzy has eyes on both sides of their head to watch out for danger.

More Fritzy's to come, with more emotions and more experimental details.

“Ratmanda”
Amanda Rybicka
Stoneware, copper carbonate, underglaze, brick

After the bubonic plague, a rat that escaped the culling carved a monument of a little girl who tried to save as many rats as she could by hiding them in her hair. Her name will forever be Ratmanda.
