Jellybean Island was a culmination of our Dad’s generation of Mexico surf exploration and our era of information and availability to chase swell …to some 40 year old rumor of empty, perfect waves.

If the jail cell walls could talk. Some wild stories might be told. Dropped off in panga by local fisherman, 70 nm from land. No fire at night to avoid detection by the Mexican Navy. Ultimately being caught… several times. Locked up on the island and transported to San Blas. For some, the allure was enough to leave the US’s bullshit behind and dedicate life to the island.

Whatever the magic of the place is, it found its way to us. Chato has been trying to convince Justin @texican665 for years. Fortunately he extended the invite to Nick, Bryan
and I.

It was a hard call to make. I have been dying to surf and was looking for a quick, easy trip. I always try to do my homework before I pull the trigger. Only a few clips of the wave. Couple cryptic online articles. Shitty forecast tools. Definitely required a leap of faith.

Wasn’t the biggest or best. The place can flex. But the feeling of being somewhere like that getting waves with just the boys is an unrivaled experience for me.

365 days gone by. Probably not one where I didn’t think about this fish. Lucky to be a small part of it. Such a fascinating animal. As Texas fleet gets more and more dialed in, I think it’s likely that we see one over the grander mark soon.

Ready to put a 📌 in summer. Been a minute since I fished the Gulf. Only made it out a few times this summer but got to see a few of my friends w/ pointy noses. Big thanks to the boys on the El Patron for having me along. Especially, Captain Clint. Known each other for over 30 years and it wasn’t until I saw his son and mine wrestling on the beach one day that I put it all together. Kieren and Teague might as well be spitting images of us when we were kids. Been fortunate to know a lot of good captains that have transformed the GOM from an also ran billfishery to one of the best fisheries in the world. Clint is definitely one of them. Guide told us “Deer hunters show up in F250s, quail hunters show up in jets”… wasn’t always that way. Appreciate a lot of the upland game bird hunting opportunities my pops gave me as a kid. Can’t really pay him back with wild birds but we made the most of it. Thanks @joevillanueva79 and Dougie Fir helping bring it together. Had a 💥… #coastalwildwings puts on a great hunt.
