I still remember the way the sun fell through the kitchen window in the mornings soft, golden light pooling on the tile like it had nowhere else to be. That house in Austin wasn’t just walls and a roof. It breathed with me. It held years of laughter, late-night talks, burnt toast, spilled coffee, and music drifting in from the porch where the wind always carried the scent of cedar and barbecue smoke.
It sat on a quiet street, shaded by oaks that grew older with me. The neighborhood changed people moved in, others moved out but somehow, my house always felt like it stood still, like it was waiting for me to slow down enough to notice the quiet.
Inside, the walls had seen it all, joy, heartbreak, the growing-up of someone who never meant to leave but knew one day they might have to. I left handprints in the backyard fence, initials scratched under the old workbench in the garage. My dog used to nap by the front door, ears twitching at every passerby. And the stars oh, the stars over Austin were clearer than they had any right to be, especially on those warm summer nights when nothing hurt, and everything seemed possible.
But time has a way of moving us forward whether we’re ready or not.
The day I left, I stood in the doorway longer than I needed to. My bags were packed, and the truck was already running. I wasn’t sure what I was waiting for. Maybe I hoped the house would say something. Maybe I hoped I’d change my mind.
But all I heard was the cicadas, the distant hum of the city waking up.
Still, in quiet moments, I find myself back there. In my mind, I walk through every room. I hear the creak of the hallway floor. I feel the breeze from the porch swing as it moves, slowly, back and forth. My daughter’s love for flowers bloomed into something beautiful now I find myself stopping to admire petals and colors I used to pass by. Her joy is contagious, her heart pure.
