The inner gorge of the Grand Canyon just east of Grapevine Creek at sunrise, April 27, 2022. The sun is lighting up the cliff-forming Tapeats Sandstone, a sedimentary rock from the Paleozoic formed about 525 Mya. Just below the Tapeats lies the Inner Gorge comprised of the Vishnu basement rocks which are over 1.6 billion years old. Separating them is the Great Unconformity, a roughly 1.1 billion year gap in the geological record.

Sometimes being at the bottom is the best place to be. This was from last year’s trip to the Canyon. Same crew, new route. We dropped in at Grandview and exited at South Kaibab. About 37 miles total including all the trips up and down drainages. Each night we dry camped, filling our water stores mid-day from puddles in the rocks at the drainages and carrying them out to the mesas to get views like this from camp. This year was hot and heavy and dry. Hike in the morning, hide from the sun under rock ledges for a few hours and then hike in the afternoon. Nothing like a nice hot walk through the desert to clear your mind. I miss it this year.

Early Sunday morning I drove out to the desert to see the blooms. A storm had just passed but the clouds were still hanging around. It felt like the opening scene from La Vallée, Barbet Schroeder’s film that Pink Floyd wrote Obscured By Clouds for so I made this little edit I shot with my iphone.
