A lot of my time is spent thinking about how I can get more risky song choices over the line when I’m playing to an audience that doesn’t know the music.

Here’s one example of how I do it; play something that’s super popular and fun right before, get on the mic to give it a bit of context, explain that it’s important to the person who’s having the party, and then watch the guests engage with them.

A lot of the time when you’re DJing a wedding you’re on the outer with the guests - they think you’re just doing your own thing, they don’t know that you’ve had deep conversations with the client about exactly how they want things to go.

My role is less about playing music that the guests want, and more about trying to pull them over into what the client wants.

The big question which I never know until the day is how tolerant are the crowd going to be of those tunes. Until you get eyes on the crowd and room, you just don’t know.
