My mom rang the bell today!! We started this long journey in January and every step of the way has been difficult, but like the strong woman she is, she proceeded to stay positive and keep her head held high. Even through all of this, she has still been there and supportive in our lives. I have never been more proud to call her my mom! This summer, I volunteered at Annie’s hope as a camp counselor. Annie’s hope is a center that helps children understand and cope with the death of a loved one. The campers I met at this camp were some of the strongest people, let alone kiddos, that I’ve ever met, dealing with some of the hardest things anyone could ever imagine. I am so honored to have been apart of their journey and so grateful for the memories made while doing so. I obviously can’t post my campers but here are some of the things we did at camp! I can’t wait to return next year and hopefully have a lasting impact on more kiddos💜 by @rylie.schaefermeier

First year in the books🩷

This first year at college has been a hard journey, but not for the typical, expected reasons. I had a blast making new friends and living on campus for this year, but I have never been more glad I chose to stay at home. In January, my family received some really hard news that we are still fighting, as a team because no one is alone, but maryville was definitely the right choice. It’s close to home, which isn’t necessary but I’m so grateful for, and has the most supportive and understanding professors ever. I am so grateful to the people this school has brought to me, and cannot wait to see what else it has in store for me. Go Saints!!🐾 by @rylie.schaefermeier

As a student at Maryville, we are encouraged to get involved in our community. One way we do this is with a day called Maryville Reaches Out. This year, I want to draw attention to a program called Kids Rock Cancer. Kids Rock Cancer is a program that was created by Maryville University to help children with cancer fight feelings of uncertainty, depression, and anxiety. A cancer diagnosis is difficult for anyone, but especially kids. Using music therapy, this program gives these children a way to feel joy and optimism. This program has had 90% of their patients improve in mood, pain, and anxiety. The opportunity to create music to describe how they are feeling helps with self-expression, self-esteem, and accomplishment. KRC is not only for children with a diagnosis, but it’s also available to children who have a family member with cancer. KRC is partnered with multiple organizations in the community , including SSM children’s hospital and Cancer Support Community of Greater St. Louis.
