Invitation to Korean Craft

D-Soban(기와소반)

Unseen : One Step Beyond

My work explores the evolving relationship between humanity, civilization, and technology.

I see technology not simply as a tool for making, but as a cultural language that shapes civilization. From this perspective, I have developed Digital Craft—a methodology exploring how the human hand, sensory experience, and cultural memory can evolve through new technologies.

I reinterpret traditional Korean forms such as roof tiles, soban, and moon jars through digital processes and new modes of making, bringing them into dialogue with the hand and the physicality of materials. For me, tradition is not a reproduction of the past, but a living culture that continually evolves toward the future.

What we create as technology today may become the cultural heritage of tomorrow.
Through my work, I explore and document the moments when technology and humanity, tradition and innovation, come together to shape new forms of culture.

A moment where tradition and technology meet in a new form, transcending the boundaries of materials.

We met Ryu Jongdae, one of the six artists featured in 〈UNSEEN: ONE STEP BEYOND〉, an exhibition presented through LOTTE NIGHT 2026.

As a contemporary sculptural artist and art furniture designer exploring the fusion of materials, craft, and digital technology, Ryu Jongdae has expanded the possibilities of materials and form by combining traditional woodworking techniques with 3D printing and digital fabrication.

Working with a diverse range of materials, including wood, metal, and bioplastics, and moving between handcrafted and digital production methods, Ryu Jongdae transforms the memories and passage of time embedded within materials into new forms.

From the stories he hoped to share through this exhibition, to his approach to crossing the boundaries between tradition and technology, craft and art, and his exploration of new forms through the combination of diverse materials and technologies—

Introducing BOLDPAGE’s Artist of the Month, Ryu Jongdae.

Ryu Jongdae brings together the forms and sensibilities of traditional craft with 3D printing and digital fabrication, developing his own approach to “digital craft,” where craftsmanship and technology coexist.

His signature work, <D-Soban>, reinterprets the curves of traditional Korean roof tiles as a contemporary object and has been selected for the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Art Bank collection, recognizing the originality of his practice.

Rather than simply reproducing traditional forms, Ryu reconsiders familiar objects and their functions in relation to contemporary ways of living, expanding them through digital technology into new forms and uses.

This exploration also extends to his choice of materials. By using bio-plastic derived from corn starch, he considers not only new methods of making, but also the possibilities of a more sustainable approach to contemporary craft.

From objects made to be viewed to pieces that can be touched, sat on, and used in everyday life, his work continues to bring craft closer to daily experience.
