On an epic sailing expedition through the Salish Sea, a shipmate asked Ryan Kinoa Kim Wilcox if he’d ever heard about Wilderness Awareness School. Later that year, he packed his bags and set off for Duvall, Washington, to join the nine-month Immersion program.

Ryan describes his time in The Immersion as an initiation of the soul. “Who would have guessed that the parts of me I had been ignorant to for so long would find their way to me in the ferns and through the fire? That my shadows were begging for courtship? That ‘the hand holding me down was none other than my own.’”

Ryan’s quest for belonging was finally satiated. Not only was he held and supported by his classmates, but he also found a new belonging to place. Tracking and scouting restored his animal body while learning the language of the birds reminded him of his own voice. “I came to the realization that no matter how intense the throes of life may get, I can walk on fire.”

The impact of my time at Wilderness Awareness School is imprinted on my soul. Wherever you are on your soul’s path, may it lead you towards The Immersion.”

Growing up in boy scouts, I thought I knew all one could know about tending a fire. After all…I could start a friction fire & cook pancakes on it faster than anyone else I knew.

Fast forward a few years, as a young college student, I definitely knew everything there was to know when it came to fire. After all…I studied its science & wore a uniform made for firemen.

Over a decade later even still, & my experience with & relationship to fire has only continued to grow. Not rain, sleet, or even snow can stop my fire from staying lit.

The Rising Man Movement is a lot like a fire…& while I surely don’t know all there is to know when it comes to tending a community, what I have observed is simple…

The more I choose to step in to community, the brighter & warmer my life becomes. by @rywilcox8

It’s just a thing of beauty. To see familiar faces dimly lit, to share our stories of trials & triumphs, joy & pain, to gaze into the fire & envision the future together.

It is in these circles I learned to value myself, lean on my team, serve my community, & be grateful for the relationships made along the way.

Water takes shape of the vessel it’s poured into. Man is no different, here’s why…

You know how it’s said you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with? Well the way I see it, those people are your vessel.

What if instead of repeatedly getting drunk at the bar with your buddies, you chose to surround yourself with those who actively seek growth?
What if instead of constantly just barely getting by, you chose to be supported by those who held you to a higher standard?

You put yourself in a team of powerful, purposeful men, you become a powerful, purposeful man. This is what the Rising Man Fire Circles are all about. If you’re a man who’s read this far, message me to discover what it takes to get you on a team of your own.

Now just to be clear, I’m not suggesting there is anything wrong with choosing “away”.
What I am suggesting is that you bring awareness to why you are choosing what you choose, & begin to make your choices with intention.

There was a time in my early adulthood where I felt so purposeless & alone…even while surrounded by smiles & being of service. Then I rediscovered something I had been missing for a very long time…

Without question, the biggest gift I have given to myself over this past decade has been to explore what healthy manhood and brotherhood means to me.
Hundreds of hours with hundreds of men, gathered around the fire, deepening our relationships with ourselves and our connections to another.
