I’d like to thank @bcbela_lead & the Burnaby School District for inviting me back to host the 2nd annual BC Black Excellence Day celebration. This event went live on January 15th and helps to celebrate the many achievements of black professionals throughout the province, broadcast to 30 school districts & over 25000 students and educators. I had the chance to interview some very inspiring people and I’m very honoured to have been such a big part of this event. How important it is that we take up space.

As a very visible minority for all my life, it’s been incredibly easy for me to joke and down play many of the strides and progress I make everyday for my community. Whether it be for the comfort of others around me or to not draw too much attention to myself, I frequently pretend my actions aren’t a big deal. But they are a big deal and downplaying them is something I’m no longer interested in doing. Sometimes we forget how motivational it is to see someone who looks like you doing what they love for the first time. It inspires you to do the same, you too dare to dream, and I’m glad to be part of a generation of artists who continue to inspire the next generation to never compromise when it comes to doing what they love. You need to LEAVE Vancouver to be a part of something BIG??

We’ve been told for so long that if you really want to “make it,” you have to leave.

Leave for Toronto. Leave for LA. Leave for New York.

And sometimes, maybe you do.

But..some of the biggest movies and shows in the world have been filmed here and even more importantly, Vancouver has an entire ecosystem of artists, VFX artists, animators, musicians, producers and filmmakers helping BUILD them.

We call Vancouver Hollywood North but what happens when a city keeps producing incredible people… but those same people don’t believe they can build something incredible entirely here?

They leave.

And then we point to their success as proof that you can only truly succeed once you leave.

Vancouver has the talent, the stories, and the people willing to do the work.

Now we just need to start believing in what can actually happen here. Right in Vancouver, BC

Vancouver DOESN’T Dance…?

Somewhere along the way to becoming the bustling city we are today, nightlife became something to watch instead of something to join in on. We dress up, buy tickets, stand with our friends… and barely move.

But it wasn’t always like this.

This city used to have dance clubs where the whole point of going out was to dance and sweat the night away. No phones. No pressure to perform. Just music, movement, and community.

So maybe the question isn’t, “Why doesn’t Vancouver dance anymore?”

Maybe it’s, “What will it take for people to feel comfortable dancing again?”

Because dancing has never just been about partying. It’s about trust. Belonging. Community. Letting your guard down without feeling judged.

If we want a vibrant nightlife scene and a stronger sense of community, maybe the answer is creating spaces that make dancing feel safe and joyous again.

Vancouver NEEDS more Third Spaces!

Every time another venue, community hub, or DIY space disappears; we lose the conversations, collaborations, and chance encounters that create culture.

The best music scenes weren’t built in boardrooms. They were built in third spaces: places where people could hang out without needing an invitation, exchange ideas, challenge each other, and build something bigger than themselves.

If we want Vancouver’s music, art, and creative communities to thrive, we need more than just talented people.

We need places where those people can actually meet.

Art doesn’t grow in isolation. It grows in community.
