The Desks.

A Partridge Shop Event: “The Desk Edit”
Photography by Emily of @thelyonswood .

When we first began imagining this evening, we thought we might create a series of desks belonging to imagined keepers: a painter, a gardener, a child, and a writer.

But as we began building them, we realized something almost immediately: the whole meaning of a desk lies in the fact that it belongs distinctly to someone. In fact, the thesis of our conversation was that a convincing desk cannot really be invented because it has to be inhabited by someone’s own thoughts, their own odd objects, their unmistakable dreams and mess.

So the installations shifted a bit. The desk beneath the shell mirror inside the studio became mine. The one beneath the great pinboard outside became Katie’s. The small secretary tucked into the trees took on a quieter, somewhat literary life of its own. The child’s desk was based loosely on my daughter’s. An unexpected desk emerged by accident at the very end, scattered with pastels and papers- a communal catch-all, if you will. The desk in front of the shop held some props we needed for our presentation and represented a much more organized person than either of us could ever possibly be.

In the end, none of the desks were perfect character studies, but weren’t even meant to be. What mattered most was that each one showed us that desks can be tucked almost anywhere and be made of almost anything (we almost fashioned one out of plywood and sawhorses). Most importantly, the desk should become a portrait of its keeper.

For every one thing we purchase for Partridge, Katie and I pass on several others.

Sometimes it’s a matter of space. Other times, a piece doesn’t quite meet our admittedly peculiar requirements for being Partridge-worthy (rare! gorgeous! weird! sentimental, beautiful or raucous history!). But that doesn’t mean we don’t love it. Someone should have these things…

So when the opportunity arose to take a space at the wildly popular @chinoiserie_squirrel , the brainchild of the hilarious (and whip smart) Linda Kincheloe, we jumped at it.

You can think of Pimlico as the less serious, slightly scrappy daughter of Partridge, where we loosen the reins and let things flow in and out with something approaching reckless abandon.

Expect a little bit of everything, and an assortment quite different from what you’ll find at Partridge. Though you may occasionally spot a familiar piece from a previous Partridge collection. We have to make room for what’s coming next!

It will be an ongoing experiment in finding common ground between very disparate things (a challenge we relish), with a quicker turnover, a broader assortment, and a wider range of price points.

Come see us on October 22nd, and follow along at @thepimlicoshop for a peek at what’s coming. by @s.m.sourcing

A note on Saturday shopping at the Fall Partridge Pop-up.

As most of you know by now, Friday (11/6) night is our VIP reception and first access to the collection. On Saturday (11/7), we’re slowing things down a bit and leaning into one of our favorite sources of inspiration: the garden.

We’ll be channeling three gardening icons who have long inspired us, each in a very different way:

Monty Don, for his constantly dirty hands, unpretentious approach to gardening, rumpled chore coats, muddy boots, deep love of the natural world, and his impossibly handsome face.

Cecil Beaton, for his eccentric English romanticism, theatrical eye, whimsical illustrations, wild abundance, and famously extravagant garden parties.

90s Martha, for that unmistakable era of khaki pleated trousers, baskets overflowing with carrots and turnips, and making absolutely everything “a good thing”.

We’re building a small Saturday edit around the three of them, with one signature piece chosen in homage to each. More on those very soon.

We’ll also be joined by a panel of gardeners talking native plants, what to pot and plant this autumn, and their own gardening journeys.

Saturday tickets ARE still available so hop on the link in my bio to grab one ($15!). And if you already have a VIP Night ticket, Saturday admission is included. We hope you’ll come back for more. We’re toying with the idea of streaming Martha and Monty shows on a projector in the garden so I think you should really consider being there.

If you read the swan Substack a couple of posts back, you may remember that Greta requested a swan party for her fifth birthday. It escalated rather quickly from there.

An old swan rocker was aquired from Facebook Marketplace (of course), a swan piñata was purchased by Mamie, and a thousand white tutus and boas somehow got added to my dreaded Bezos cart at 3am one morning. The orange cosmos in our yard, which somehow know to be in full bloom every year for Greta’s birthday, took care of the flowers.

There were swan masks to decorate, and a wheelbarrow full of sticks, leaves and garden rubbish available to build a nest for Francesca. The children proved to be surprisingly accomplished nest builders.
We played Swan, Swan, Goose and listened to Bjork and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, and YouTubed ‘swans floating on a lake’ for the TV.

Greta had also specifically requested a swan cake, so I bought two Publix sheet cakes, butchered one of them into the general shape of a bird, added palmiers for feathers, an aluminum-foil neck, chocolate-chip eyes and some ancient food coloring I found in the cabinet for the beak.

A party to remember, and I think I’m officially done with swans forever. It’s been a very fun ride.

DANGIT! Unfortunately, the Fall Partridge Calendar will not be distributed this season.

Late in production (Friday 😖), we learned that the linen paper used for our last calendar was no longer available due to tornado damage affecting its distribution in Wisconsin. By the time we received that news, there simply wasn’t enough time to find a comparable paper, print the calendars, and get them into your hands by September 1st.

Trust us, we tried.

We explored alternatives through several different printers, begged and pleaded, but the available paper was sub-par, and size requirements meant that a September calendar would arrive “sometime” in September. This was a tad too ambiguous, even for us.

If you’ve already purchased a calendar, your $15 will be refunded in full. For those who planned to purchase one, or those receiving a refund, we hope you might consider putting that $ toward the community affected by the tornado instead, which caused significant damage throughout Wisconsin’s Fox Cities.

Donations can be made to the United Way Fox Cities Community Response Fund (verified link in Stories), which supports recovery efforts in the affected community.

We’re so sorry not to have a Fall Calendar headed your way tomorrow, but our disappointment pales in comparison to what so many in the Fox Cities lost during this July storm.

Thank you, as always, for supporting our Partridge projects. Please mark the calendars you do have (with actual dates) for this Friday when ticket sales go live for the November 6 & 7 Fall Partridge Pop-up. We look forward to seeing many of you there! by @s.m.sourcing

Partridge: Fall 2026 Edition
November 6 + 7

We’re baaaack!

Join us Friday evening, November 6, for our VIP First Look (the early partridge gets the goods). We have a few surprises in store for this one that you won’t want to miss.

Saturday, November 7, we’ll be back for a full day of shopping.

Both days will be ticketed. We’re opening the garden to more guests this round, but don’t rest too comfortably on those laurels. We can only accommodate so many, and tickets tend to go quickly.

Tickets go live Friday, September 4.

Meet Francesca.

What began with two discarded fruit baskets, some packing foam and $16 at Upcycle Arts turned into approximately 72 hours, a gallon of Elmer’s glue, several coats of Benjamin Moore’s Simply White, one late-night neck surgery and a rather consuming relationship with a giant papier-mâché swan.

She is wonky, slightly dilapidated, not remotely anatomically correct, and I absolutely love her.

The full story of Franny, including the moment I finally thought to look at an actual swan, is on Substack.
