I went to the @lucasmuseum over the weekend and am now remembering that I recently created an illustration for @edutopia, another George Lucas endeavor. This piece is about how school leaders can help students feel seen and known. Art direction by @annelisecapossela, who was a joy to work with. #editorialillustration #edutopia #childrenseducation #kto12 #illustration by @sa.deng

Having a baby after 45. Created two more pieces for @aarp, this time for @thegirlfriendletter and @aarpethel. Such a joy to work with the wonderful @dianholton. 🌺 #illustration #editorialillustration The most surprising thing about old age. Three Wishes 💫 17”x14” Colored pencil on paper Always pictured myself floating in the ocean at night whenever the anxiety monster becomes overwhelming. Swipe to see a similar piece that I did 10 years ago, found in @agedungs and @d00m1ce’s zine. Not much has changed since then, except maybe my drawing abilities. 🌠 #drawing #ocean #nightsky #shootingstars #coloredpencil by @sa.deng
“This Is the Sound I’m Soothed By Most” Received this assignment right as I was about to download the Merlin app to identify birds on my hikes. 😆 For @aarpethel with art direction from the lovely Jenny Rosenberg. 🐦 🪿🦉🐦‍⬛🦆 #illustration #editorialillustration #birding #birb by @sa.deng
The Ocean and I A small piece for someone going through a heavy loss. Just like waves, people come and go and it’s a reminder of how precious and fleeting it all really is. Still not great at it but I’d like to think I’ve gotten better over the years at making time for those I care about. I promise I’ll keep trying. 🌊 by @sa.deng
Presenting Cover A for 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 325, our Fall 2026 issue. Subscribe by August 1 to get this issue. (Keep an eye out for the Cover B reveal tomorrow 👀) On the cover: “Beaver the Cat.” Acrylic on paper, 10.25x13.5 inches, 2026. Painted for 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 by Sally Deng (@sa.deng). A cat. On a plane. In Alaska. What more could we ask for? After reading the first draft of Zach Lovell’s (@thealpinelife) profile of Beaver — the longtime resident cat of Alaska’s Talkeetna Air Taxi (@talkeetnaair) — which appears in this issue, we knew it would make for a fun, whimsical cover. We also knew @sa.deng was the one to get it done. Inside Summit Journal 325, there are some heavy, heart-wrenching themes. But there’s also lots of levity and silliness. Beaver’s story encapsulates both. (Plus, 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵 featured a dog on the cover back in 1980. Only seemed right that we get a cat on there one of these days...) Keep an eye out for a signed-and-numbered limited-edition print of “Beaver the Cat” — coming soon. by @sa.deng
