“White World is a singularly distinctive and creative look at what happens to individuals, communities, and countries when dehumanization and violence are allowed to run rampant. Other countries (doing the same) may wish to take note.”

It’s Not Over Yet

Hussain’s YA debut is an earnest exploration of inner and external turmoil. When a medical diagnosis unravels his young life, Wali embarks on a self-discovery quest that’s surprisingly complex.

Hussain explores weighty issues like mortality and faith, identity and immigration, family and friendship, love, and even legacy. That’s the centrifugal force of the book: though still a teenager, Wali is asking questions that touch upon all stages of life.

Organic and honest, Wali exudes an effortless charm as you follow his POV. Funny, raw, intelligent, curious, but at times every bit as reckless as you’d expect a 15-year-old to be, it’s impossible not to like Wali.

Wali’s relationships with the supporting characters are wholesome, at times problematic, but always painfully human. The dynamic between him and “K-man” was easily the highlight of the book for me.

There’s so much here for everyone, especially young adults of all walks of life. “It’s Not Over Yet” is a triumphant debut by Hussain and a shining entry in the CanLit YA panoply. Alhamdulillah!

Digger (Spoilers)

Inaritu’s “Digger” follows a Southern fossil fuel magnate, Digger Rockwell, whose greed brings the world to its knees when an avoidable climate change catastrophe strikes. The message is indeed layered on thick. Tom Cruise as Digger is a grating, megalomaniacal caricature of a rich conservative Texan. He even does finger pistols. It’s the kind of zealous, outrageous performance that would leave Nicholas Cage taking notes.

But just when you roll your eyes at the haminess of it all, the set pieces are quite literally pulled away and you realize the movie Digger is in fact a satirical play about a historical Digger who destroyed the world that this play takes place in. Suddenly the exaggerations of what you’ve been watching for 30 minutes or so are re-contextualized.

Yes, it’s clever. It’s even cheeky.

Cruise’s performance alone is worth the price of admission. The larger-than-Texas Digger persona is tempered deftly by the earnest, albeit high-strung stage-actor persona, Curtis Markson. Where Digger’s external world is coming apart due to his own actions, Curtis’ inner world is in turmoil from the actions of the historical Digger (a genuinely clever subplot tying both personas together).

Sadly, the movie is too clever for its own good.

This is Inaritu’s Dr. Strangelove: a dark satire on a leading world issue, this one being climate change and fossil fuel greed. If that much wasn’t obvious, the movie even interrupts itself to have two characters argue over when something is satire or gauche slapstick. If that still wasn’t enough, yet another character then interrupts them to explain why it “all works”.

Look, I understand. Inaritu has won two consecutive “Best director” awards at the Oscars. Deservedly so. If anyone gets to be haughty enough to interrupt his own a-play-within-a-movie-within-a-fictional-post-apocalypse to explain why it all works as a work of art, it’s Inaritu. I get it.

Still, I think it should be illegal to be this far up your own ass.

7/10

Stranded in the Alaskan wilderness, a retired soldier and his grizzled service dog set out to do what they’ve done their entire lives: survive.

The script is Spartan. The story isn’t particularly unique either. But I often argue that most stories have already been told, and art is merely a retelling of them. And like all great art, it moves us because it speaks to a truth within us. This unshakeable feeling that there is more to life than the mundane.

Brad Pitt was phenomenal here. His expressions, the generosity with which he shares the screen, the granite-like willpower, cracks and all, driving the narrative are exactly what you’d expect from someone who has been a Hollywood A-lister for 30 years.

Yet somehow, watching the movie, you find yourself wondering how a dog is outacting an Oscar winner.

But he is.

It’s the cinematography. It’s the patience. It’s those quiet moments that linger and breathe. Slowly zooming in on an animal’s eyes as it watches the wilderness around it (is it fear? Defiance? Acceptance?) is the kind of storytelling gravitas we should all aspire to.

There were so many moments when what would otherwise have been loud, explosive sequences of action were met with silence from the packed cinema because we were all so engrossed in this tale.

And the layers don’t stop there. There are things at play here that exist just beyond the natural world. They’re never explicitly shown, but hinted at through unforgettable images, left to linger in your mind long after you’ve left the cinema and find yourself driving home in silence.

Easily one of the best movie of the year.

9/10

Spicy take: I’d rather be in a room full of *gasp* straight white men debating an idea from different lenses, than be in a room full of BIPOC people nodding over platitudes.

Diversity has its place. Race, ideology, identity, it’s all important. But diversity of thought and diversity of experiences is what makes it truly valuable. Otherwise it’s just window dressing.

I’m not here to agree with established ideas and make them palatable to people who resemble me. I’m not here so someone can check a box. I’m not here to be a brownie point (no pun intended).

I’m here to tell you how I see the world and what led me to think the way I do.
