In the last couple of weeks I sent some of the donated money to someone I know in a small town here in Caldas who had the roof of her home/business collapse.

Many Colombians don’t have homeowner’s insurance, so the funds will help her with the materials and labor to get the roof fixed so she can start working again.

I’ve also joined forces with my friend @karobeltrans who is also managing donated funds and items. We’re buying essential groceries and personal hygiene supplies and putting together care packages for specific families in our area.

Thanks so much to everyone who has donated! So far I’ve received about $3800 in donations and spent about $1800. This money went principally to food for people and pets and personal hygiene supplies.

In the coming weeks I’d like to focus on people in the less-resourced rural areas around the city and on people who need help repairing and rebuilding their homes.

Today’s my birthday. And I’m not a big presents person, but if you’d like to send a gift, a donation towards the earthquake relief fund would be hugely appreciated.

Friends! Can you donate to earthquake relief in Colombia? Even a small amount can go a long way!
Colombia has been my home for nearly 3 years. This country and its people have welcomed me with so much openness and kindness, and it’s awful to see the way that people in my community are suffering in the wake of Monday’s earthquake.

Here in Manizales, thousands of people can’t return to their homes because the buildings are unsafe. People and pets are still missing. As I write this, I can smell smoke from a house fire that just broke out in a poor neighborhood at the edge of the city.

I’ve been buying supplies to donate to the people who’ve been most affected. If you’d like to contribute directly to those purchases, you can find me on Venmo and PayPal @SachiAinge. For transparency, I’ll maintain documentation of money received and spent at the link in my bio.

Or if you feel more comfortable donating to a nonprofit, please choose one that has met stringent 3rd party vetting standards through a site like Charity Navigator.

Here in Manizales, $30 USD can feed a person for a week, so really anything you can give can make a difference.

Been a few years since I got serious about making a Halloween costume. Here’s the process video for bringing Frailejón Ernesto Pérez (a Colombian eco-educational cartoon character) to life.

Featuring:
Thrifted sweater, leggings, and tights
Polyester pillow filling
Styrofoam eyeballs 👀
And an elaborate wire-based headdress armature

The look was well received by the Colombian public. Some sang the theme song with me, and a few people asked to take photos together.

Hace dos años, mientras paseaba con unas amigas, conocí a un guía colombiano en el Recinto del Pensamiento, y le tomé unas fotos sigilosamente porque me gustaba tanto. Me impresionó con su conocimiento de los volcanes hawaianos, y dos años después, me sigue impresionando con su pasión por la naturaleza, su madurez emocional, y su espíritu alegre.

Two years ago, while I was traveling with some friends, I met a Colombian guide at the Recinto del Pensamiento, and I sneakily took some photos of him because I thought he was so cute. He impressed me with his knowledge of Hawaiian volcanoes, and two years later, he continues to impress me with his passion for nature, his emotional maturity, and his joyful spirit.

Attended an intensive week-long training to become a Wilderness First Responder. We slept in tents, and spent 11 hours a day in lectures, practice, and emergency simulations. We took turns being victims and learned to treat conditions in remote areas, ranging from altitude sickness to trauma, childbirth complications to anaphylaxis. And it was all in Spanish. Feeling very accomplished and well prepared!

How to prevent your LG washing machine from growing mold.

I’ve been using this type of washer for years and have always had this problem. I just figured this out. Made this video for my dog sitting client, but figured that others might find it helpful.
