The skink slinks in a blink to hoodwink the photographink, I think.I have been trying to photograph skinks for quite some time now. But whenever I get within shooting distance, they run away so quickly that they could go for gold at the London Olympics. I am left holding the camera having captured a beautiful photograph of the patch of earth where there should have been a skink. Skinks are lizards belonging to the family Scincidae. Together with several other lizard families, including Lacertidae (the "true" or wall lizards), they comprise the superfamily or infraorder Scincomorpha. With about 1200 described species, the Scincidae are the second most diverse family of lizards, exceeded only by the Gekkonidae (or geckos). The skink is a ground-dwelling lizard, easily recognized by its glossy scales. It has enlarged symmetrical shields on the head, a broad flat tongue and movable eyelids. The small limbs and elongated body gives it the appearance of snakes, and it moves very quickly. Chambal ka daakuMack the Knife -- The first time I laid my eyes on a robber fly, I didn't know what it was. But I was sure about one thing -- it was one weird-looking insect.When I found out what the fly with the prehistoric appearance was called, I wondered at the name -- robber fly. As I read on, I understood. It perches on twigs and leaves and attacks flying prey in mid air, much like a robber who waits for and attacks passersby.It seems robber flies -- also known as assassin flies -- are fast and agile, and can catch bugs larger than themselves. They typically prey on wasps, bees, grasshoppers, spiders and dragonflies. The robber fly grabs prey around the head or back and stabs it with its proboscis, injecting neurotoxic and digestive enzymes.
