There’s a saint buried in Nikes. 👟 So… are those sneakers a first class relic?

I’ve been learning about saints like this one on @creedoapp, and Carlo’s story stopped me in my tracks. Five minutes a day, and I’m finally getting to know the friends the Church has given us.

Friends, this one gets me every time. In Assisi, St. Carlo Acutis lies in jeans, a sweatshirt, and Nike sneakers. Not robes. Not a habit. Sneakers.

Carlo was 15. He played video games, taught himself to code, and built a website cataloguing Eucharistic miracles. He went to Mass every single day and called the Eucharist his “highway to heaven.” He died of leukemia in 2006, and last year he became the first millennial saint.

Now, about those Nikes. The Church has three classes of relics:
1️⃣ First class: the saint’s body itself (bones, hair, blood)
2️⃣ Second class: things the saint owned or used (clothes, a rosary, yes, sneakers)
3️⃣ Third class: objects touched to a first or second class relic

So Carlo’s sneakers? Second class. They’re right on his body, but they’re still his stuff, not him. Being close to a saint doesn’t make something a first class relic. Only a saint’s own body does.

And here’s the twist: the sneakers can never be first class… but you can. 🤯 Every one of us is called to be a saint. Your body, made holy by grace and the Eucharist, is the only thing that could ever be a first class relic.

This isn’t new, by the way. A dead man came back to life touching Elisha’s bones (2 Kings 13:21), and cloths touched to St. Paul healed the sick (Acts 19:11–12). God has always worked through matter.

Carlo used the internet to help people know their faith. I think he’d love that we can do the same thing today. That’s what @creedoapp is for me: a few minutes each day to learn the faith, meet the saints, and grow a little closer to Jesus. If you’ve been wanting to know your faith better but don’t know where to start, start there. Small, faithful steps add up. Just ask Carlo.

Today, October 12, is his feast day. If he could become a saint in Nikes, so can you.

St. Carlo Acutis, pray for us! 🙏

Comment below how you’re going to pray for Brock!!! Who knows, he could be a future pope / saint, he needs our prayers!!!

It’s natural for humans to want to show off, and display the things that we are proud of, and it got me thinking about why do I not display my faith more?

Happy feast of All Saints! by @sacredgraceproject

Catholicism is a team sport, not individuals!

All Saints Day reminds us that we are all going to be there together, so we need to start acting like it while we’re here on earth, instead of competing with each other as if if we get a higher mark than someone else here on earth that that will benefit us somehow.

What actually benefits us is if we get as many people as possible to heaven! And we do that through being in Christ to each other, through showing our love, our humility, our saintly sportsmanship in putting others ahead of us.

The term holier than thou has no place in Catholicism!

Let’s remember that we are all on the same team and not only that, we will all be together eternally in heaven with each other! by @sacredgraceproject
