Great day! Harvested more yellow pear tomatoes, 4 lbs of green beans (again), eggplants, Hungarian peppers, and bell peppers with my mother-in-law, Linda Hoyt. by @sacredhunter

Why are we willing to suffer physical pain and exhaustion to pursue the things we love? Building a duck blind the old fashioned way is the most rewarding activity when the finished product allows us to be present for the opening day sunrise. We pray for whistling wings and raucous quacks in the pre-dawn with the same burning desire to recapture some of the sweat we paid in physical currency. Blessings to all you waterfowlers who have known the glory of the hard work it takes to feel like this is where we were meant to be. The first Saturday in September trumpets the beginning of the final preparation for duck season as Vermonters are allowed to build a blind on state waters. As this has been a tradition for my group of waterfowlers, it was obvious that we were now considered old timers. Not many people build stake blinds anymore. They’ve got fancy boats with high-powered mud motors that can go anywhere which, I’ll admit, give them the advantage of mobiliy. But nothing compares to a stake blind on Opening Morning while eating goose sausage sandwiches off the little propane grill and sipping high powered French roast coffee while listening to the whistling wings above our heads in the dark. I don’t know if being proud of a foraging score should be honored with the same bragging rights as trophy hunters on other forums where we brag about the biggest lake trout, the biggest buck, or a limit of ducks or geese, but this is by far my personal best puff ball. Also, apparently I have become a master of the run-on sentence. Please forgive me. by @sacredhunter

I’ve never been the guy who claims his crossbow is so powerful and my skill is “good enough” that he will take a shot at 50 or 60 yards feeling confident about not wounding a whitetail. I stretch out my practice shots to 35, then 36, and finally 37 yards. Beyond that, I prefer to be humble about my abilities. This is 32 yards and I’m okay with this. by @sacredhunter
