DOUGLA is travelling to Toronto!

We are so overjoyed to share that our screendance has been officially selected for Screen Share: Caribbean Stories, Collective Power 2026 presented by @caribbeantales and @caribbeanfilmfest

DOUGLA will screen on September 12th as part of their Living Legacies programme, thoughtfully placing the film in conversation with the crosscurrents of migration, ancestral memory, cultural politics and survival.

We are grateful to everyone who helped bring this work into being and honoured to share it with audiences in Toronto. 🤍 by @sadebudhlall

“None of these projects actually ask dance to solve political problems. Instead, choreography creates space to rehearse political capacities: listening, trusting, witnessing, grieving, resting, risking, imagining, negotiating, and remaining in relation.”

DOUGLA will be part of @modarts_dance’s #MoveToChange Dance Festival screening online from Oct 5th to 25th 2026.

The film gathers around this year’s theme, Ujima: Collective Work and Responsibility, with its own questions around how collective life is remade through relating through our differences.

Deep gratitude to the festival organizers for making space for Caribbean stories and for inviting us into this wider conversation on community making. 🤍

You can see the performances in person, via livestream, or on demand.

Our intention in this dance was to listen to what is genuinely happening between our bodies and not protect the other from being changed by the experience.

Can we be in relation if nothing is affected or risked?

DOUGLA, a screendance exploring Afro-Indo relational politics through an encounter between Moko Jumbie and Odissi practice will be screened at @1261filmfestival Grenada this October.

Featuring the incredible @thegoldenmoko

More information on the festival and its brilliant lineup of films can be found on their (gorgeously designed) website at www.1261filmfestival.com by @sadebudhlall

Thinking fondly of my growing relationship with @aliceyardinsta, with so much appreciation for the love and support they continue to give to my practice.

Thank you for all that you do in the spirit of community, and for continuing to nourish the creative energy that flows through your space.

Congratulations on 20 remarkable years, and on all that has been made possible along the way. 🤍

POV: you completed your master’s degree.

I am overcome with tears looking back at the most beautiful two years of my life.

What a groundbreaking course to have found a home in @ma_dance_pca. To grow in love alongside a global community of some of the most brilliant artists I have ever met!

I share this incredible feat with you, and with the people in Trinidad who filled my practice with so much joy and meaning.

Thank you everyone for moving with me, thinking with me, being curious with me. Thank you for listening, witnessing, challenging, encouraging, and holding space as my artistic voice became stronger, clearer.

You taught me the importance of dancing in a world both fractured and beautiful, and I carry all of our encounters forward with me. 🤍 by @sadebudhlall

Screen Share presents DOUGLA, directed by Sádé Budhlall and Jerel Ramsey, and screening on September 12.

An Odissi dancer, imagined as an Apsara. A Moko Jumbie on stilts. Two movement worlds, one Indian and one African, reaching toward each other across a speculative plantation-era Trinidad.

This striking screendance explores Afro-Indo relational politics through the encounter between these two traditions. Rather than presenting connection as seamless, DOUGLA attends to its difficulty — the fragility and ongoing labour of relation within histories shaped by slavery, Indian indenture, and colonial systems of separation.
