The last few weeks I’ve been in Parker, Colorado studying rosette techniques and building a Flamenco guitar with luthier Paco Chorobo and Robbie O’Brien. The experience was transformative. Besides the exceptional instruction, Paco and Robbie’s generosity and hospitality were second to none. They build amazing guitars. But for us students they were what you want a teacher to be - knowledgeable, patient, personal and challenging. Finally closing the ‘box’ and gluing the binding on this wenge back and sides and bear claw moon spruce top. The top bracing and voicing are inspired by Garrett Lee. - What calm enjoyment to build and slow down enough to block the noise from outside and focus on the details. Back at it! After a move and setting up a new workshop, I’m cutting and gluing wood again. Presently working on a classical guitar with wenge wood back and sides, with a moon spruce top. The top bracing is inspired by luthier Garrett Lee.

Some excerpts from our first orchestra and dress of Bitter Sweet – OLO 2025

My first encounter with Noël Coward’s Bitter Sweet was not from the audience, but from the wings—calling the show as a stage manager with The Ohio Light Opera in the early 1990s. Bitter Sweet left an indelible mark on me as a stage director—not just for its sweeping romance and unforgettable melodies, but for its deeply human themes of passion, loss, and artistic sacrifice. That experience was transformative, sparking a lifelong love for operetta and shaping my voice as a stage director. It also cemented my devotion to OLO’s mission—to preserve and celebrate the lyric theater tradition with care, style, and a sense of joy. Bitter Sweet was more than a production; it was a revelation, and the beginning of a lifelong journey in operetta. Some 35 years later, I get to finally direct this show with this dedicated and talented OLO 2025 company. With lush melodies, the score shimmers with emotion and continental flair. It’s Coward at his most sentimental, yet delightfully cheeky—a glamorous, time-traveling tale where passion dares to defy society, and music lingers long after the final curtain.

For 46 melodious years, The Ohio Light Opera has been delightfully “aesthetic” in its unwavering devotion to Gilbert and Sullivan. Founded on the very wit and whimsy of these Victorian masters, OLO has kept the Dragoon Guard helmets polished, the patter songs speedy, and Bunthorne and Grosvenor’s poetry in proper order. With a mission to preserve, produce, and promote the best of lyric theater, we’ve made it our business to ensure that “if you’re anxious for to shine in the high aesthetic line,” you’ll find no better place than Wooster, Ohio. With full productions, lush orchestrations, engaging staging, and rich production values, we salute the 2025 company for their endless hours of continuing OLO’s tradition.
