I like the first half of this advice, but not the second.

Instead of saying:
"Are you having a bad day or do you talk to everyone like this?"

Try:
“I’m sorry… it seems like you’re having a bad day.”

If your goal is to make someone feel awkward as he's suggesting, stop talking.

You’re not helping.

Sometimes you’re dealing with a rude person.

Sometimes you’re dealing with a good person having a bad day.

A little kindness can defuse more than a clever comeback.

Walking on Sunshine or Headed For Trouble!

In this video, I offer some insights into Situational Awareness and enjoying a pleasant stroll into a more isolated area.

It is necessary, as always, to keep yourself aware of your surroundings, mainly when it is a bit more isolated than usual.

If you're out enjoying nature, genuinely enjoy nature. Keep the headphones off, cell phones put away and head on a swivel, taking in the environment.

Where would you go? What would you do if you were confronted?

Not On My Watch Junior!

One of the most critical skills to learn if a confrontation goes physical is the ability to recognize the pre-contact cues to violence.

If one can read the body language of an attack at its earliest stages, they increase their ability to intercept and stop it or at least minimize its effects.

There are many cues to reading body language. Just a few include.

Body Positioning - does one shift their weight back and forth or blade their body? Is their chest puffed up to intimidate? Are they moving into striking range?

Hands: Can you see both hands? Are they clenching their fists, opening or closing them? If you can't see both hands, be aware they may be hiding a weapon.

Facial Expressions - are they clenching their teeth, nostrils flaring their nostrils, staring at you angrily, or even looking away to distract you?

Verbal Cues - they might even tell you what they will do due to overconfidence.

In this video, the aggressor does not appear very skilled, nor does his intended target. He does attempt to take advantage of the other guy, looking away.

His strike was quickly stopped by our bystander, who put his hand out and prevented the punch.

Last Friday at Schiphol, I tried to de-escalate a confrontation.

Two men were standing over another passenger, raising their voices, pointing fingers and clenching their fists. The passenger was sitting with his laptop, looking vulnerable.

I decided to step in and use the de-escalation techniques I learned from Chris Roberts and now teach to others. I approached calmly, apologised for interrupting and asked what had happened and how I could help.

The men directed their anger at me, but I stayed calm and created distance. I learned that a bottle of alcohol had broken, apparently after being knocked over by the seated passenger. When I acknowledged how frustrating it must have been—especially if the bottle was expensive—their anger began to fade.

The situation de-escalated. Everyone eventually went home safely.

My reflections:

• I stepped in too quickly. Other passengers had already alerted KLM staff, who called the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee. They handled the situation well.
• I allowed one of the men to get too close. I should have created more distance sooner.
• I told him, “Don’t touch me.” That was a command, and commands can escalate situations.
• Staying calm, friendly and empathetic worked. These weren’t “bad guys”—just people having a very bad moment.
• Although my approach may have looked unusual—hands up, moving backwards and asking how I could help—it achieved the goal: everyone got home safely.

On the bystanders: only two people contacted staff. The rest watched.

If you see someone in danger, call for help. And if you feel confident and it’s safe to do so, consider how you might support the situation without putting yourself at risk.

Have you ever been in a similar situation? How did you respond?

Owan Tuininga has been in fighting sports almost all of his life.

Karate. Kickboxing. Boxing. Military self-defence. Krav Maga. Ex-military.

This is not a guy new to training. He has extensive experience.

But when he went looking for something that addressed the safety needs of regular people, he found SAFE.

He became a SAFE Certified Instructor and now runs ARX Personal Safety, teaching prevention first and physical as the last resort.

So when a guy with that background talks about the SAFE Scenario Trainer, instructors should listen.

Here is what he said:
"As a certified SAFE Instructor, what I really like about the SAFE Scenario Trainer is that it helps me create realistic scenarios quickly.

Before, it would cost me a lot of time to come up with scenarios for my customer trainings, but with the Scenario Trainer I can literally choose from a great selection of scenarios, created out of the vast experience and wide background of Chris.

It not only gives you scenarios, but also lets you go deeper and weigh different responses and reactions, which helps me better reflect on my customers' behaviour in trainings.

I can recommend the Scenario Trainer to every instructor wanting to go further than the typical scenarios, and who wants real-world scenarios with a wide array of appropriate responses to reflect on."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
— Owan Tuininga, SAFE Certified Instructor, ARX Personal Safety

If you run trainings, the Scenario Trainer saves you hours and sharpens your scenarios.

Today is a sad day in our household as we say goodbye to our little Louie. The little guy has been my true buddy, but after fighting heart issues and dementia for the last while, it was time to let him rest.

No matter how sick he was, he would still recognize me when I came home and wag his tail. For 16 years—from the time our daughter was in her last year of high school until today—aside from my wife, I probably spent the most time with him.

He was my constant companion. Back in the day, he even had his own Facebook page and loved posing for the camera. We are going to miss you so much, Louie, aka Woowie.

Here are just a couple of the 100s of pics I have of the little guy, but in particular, the painting my cousin did of Louie a number of years back is particularly special.

Most people never plan to get shoved, and it usually happens because someone got too close to you. Sometimes because they moved in quickly; sometimes because egos collide and nobody backs up.

If you're too close, some will use a quick shove to make just enough space to throw a punch. Others shove to knock you off balance, intimidate you, or control you.

Often, many will brace themselves against the shove, which might work sometimes, but it can also be taken as a challenge, and things escalate.

Intercepting works sometimes. But when the person is too close, it usually fails.

What I rarely see taught is learning how to TAKE a shove. If you learn and train to take a shove, it can buy you extra space to talk and de-escalate, offer you distance to escape, or time to prepare your defence.

Keep SAFE

Even the most experienced instructors want another set of eyes on their work.

Shellé and Dave Friedman run LiveSafe Education, a leading provider of personal safety and self-defence training for corporations, schools, individuals, and community organizations in Australia. They brought me a real question about how to safely exit a tense situation.

What came out of it is a good look at how experienced people sharpen each other, all working toward the same goal: keeping people safe.

New from SAFE International: a real look at how experienced instructors work together to keep people safe.

Shellé and Dave Friedman brought me a real scenario about de-escalating an aggressive client. Here is what came out of that conversation.

And the argument never ends.

Krav Maga is best. No, Jiu Jitsu. Hey, my Judo or my Kung Fu! No, this style. No, this system.

The truth?

What you learn or teach matters. But almost any defence, good or bad, can work or fail. And it's usually not the style or the system that decides it.

It's the person.

Some ridiculous techniques have worked. Some simple, solid skills have failed.

So stop the madness of "my style or system is best."

You can't force your killer style or system on someone.

What you can do is look at the actual student in front of you. Their experience. Their challenges. Their strengths and weaknesses.

And build a safety plan based on the human in front of you, not a written curriculum that never changes.

But sure, keep arguing online about which system would win. That'll help them.

“𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐈 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭… 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐳𝐞.”

 I asked, “What’s wrong?”

She whispered, “I can’t remember which way to spin to get out.”
That moment changed my entire approach to teaching self-defence over 25 years ago.

I quickly realized students don’t remember 10 different ways to escape.

In fact, most certifications train instructors to overload people with techniques that fail under pressure.

So I simplified. Basic concepts and principles that actually work when stress hits.

That moment became the foundation of how I teach today — and eventually, the SAFE Certification.

SAFE equips instructors to teach prevention, defuse conflict, and deliver real self-defence — in hours, not years.

Curious? See why instructors in 12+ countries are making the switch.

I've seen a number of people with this amazing self defence ability, but this guy is even able to create sounds with his defensive moves. What fluidity amidst the brutality of this attack. Video from @mcdojolife

I gotta train with this guy.
