📞⚡️ PHONE ZAP 📞⚡️

The city is escalating its attacks against unhoused neighbors. Swipe for a script to call the Managing Director and demand that they end the Kensington Blitz!

On September 5th, Carlton Williams, the city’s new Managing Director, launched the Kensington Blitz, an aggressive new initiative cracking down on unhoused community members and drug users in Kensington. This initiative has been publicized as a street cleaning and community building initiative. In reality, it’s hurting our unhoused neighbors.

Mayor Parker has swept encampments, defunded syringe service programs, and banned mobile service providers. Her administration forced Beacon House to permanently close, eliminating dozens of critical low-barrier shelter beds. Her Kensington Neighborhood Wellness Center and Wellness Court have been massive failures, doing nothing to address homelessness and provide voluntary and quality pathways to treatment, and yet she is pumping millions more into their budgets.

The Kensington Blitz is more of the same - expensive, contradictory, ineffective, and morally wrong. End the Blitz, stop dehumanizing unhoused neighbors, and stop criminalizing care.

If Parker thinks this reckless cruelty will help her get reelected, she’s dead wrong. #OneTermCherelle by @safephila

Image Description: Close up of a light pink tulip among about a dozen more light pink tulips, blurred in the background. Blurred trees in the distance break up an overcast sky. Scripted text over the image states “Some exciting news from Project SAFE.”

Following slides depict text over an image of a cloudy sky in shades of light pink and light blue.

In 2017, a Project SAFE member purchased a previously abandoned property in Kensington, and is now in the process of donating the property to Project SAFE for the purposes of opening a “Come As You Are” community drop-in center.

The block, primarily inhabited by BIPOC residents, has a number of abandoned properties that unhoused Black and Latine people who use drugs (PWUD) have squatted over the years. It has an intact and stable foundation and is alredy known to many SAFE members but requires a full renovation to be usable.

We are working to raise $130,000 to support this renovation.
Our deliveries participants and people we meet on street outreach have been requesting a brick and mortar peer-run community space for many years, to access much-needed services in a nonjudgmental and nondiscriminatory environment.

We are so grateful & excited at the opportunity to finally create that for them & our completely street based collective. Based on the location and on our presence in the neighborhood, we anticipate that we will be a first point of contact for many Black and Latinx PWUDs in the area, as well as our already existing street based members.

With a space of our own, we plan to provide the following no-to-low threshold services: referrals to social services & treatment programs, showers, clothing, hot meals, harm reduction supplies, emotional support from peers & volunteers, meeting space for resting, debriefing & supporting each others’ needs, a nap room.

Our collective ran a similar space in a rental property in the neighborhood from 2017-2021. We are ready to make the move to owning our own community drop-in center to provide the same supports, needs & more. (more in the comments) by @safephila

The vote on the Mobile Services Ban (Bill #240665) has been moved to THIS THURSDAY MAY 8TH.

Amendments were introduced to delay the vote but there were no substantial changes to the bill. The fact remains the purpose is to regulate harm reduction and other groups out of their ability to serve people in the seventh district. Philadelphia City Council is choosing to criminalize compassion at a time when it is needed most.

Keep the pressure up by calling your city council member and the at-large members. ☎️

🚨🚨The final vote for bill # #240665 banning mobile services in Philadelphia is this Thursday, May 1st. This means it’s GO TIME.

The people of Kensington depend on the health care, material support, and harm reduction services they receive from mobile service providers, and we will not let the Kensington Caucus push them out of the neighborhood.

City Council works for US, join us in making our voices heard.

Here’s our ask: CALL, EMAIL, or SIGN UP TO TESTIFY to tell City Council that we won’t let them abandon the people of Kensington, housed and unhoused alike. See the slides for on how to sign up to testify AGAINST this deadly bill.

See the link in @communityactionreliefproject or @solcollectivephilly bios for a thorough toolkit with more information about the bill and resources to resist.

📑 UPDATE on the Mobile Services Ban:

It looks like our efforts are working because bill number 240665 is being held until the new year. This means there is no need to sign up to testify at tomorrow’s 12/12) city council meeting.

🙏🙏 THANK YOU to everyone who showed up on December 2nd and has been calling and emailing their council members since them.

🚨🚨But this is not over!! We will be sure to keep everyone posted on when the bill will be heard next year and opportunities to testify or provide public comment against it. by @safephila

This is how the Kensington Caucus treats people who provide services to their neighborhood.

LYING about what’s in the bill, claiming that it will “coordinate” services, when it only stipulates for ENDING them.

INTERRUPTING members of the public giving testimony.

SCREAMING at a clergy member who has worked in Kensington for 35 years.

DEHUMANIZING people who have been failed by the state as “homeless addicts.”

Councilmembers Lozada, Harrity, Squilla, and Driscoll, continue to disregard the fact that City Council is meant to represent both housed AND unhoused residents of Philadelphia, ignoring the notion that many HOUSED individuals in Kensington receive these services as well. Why are they totally unable to comprehend how disease prevention in Kensington means disease prevention for ALL of Philadelphia?

The mobile services ban, Bill #240665, will be voted on at City Council on Thursday, December 12th. Call 215-686-3406 by 3pm on Wednesday to sign up to testify on how important wound care, overdose prevention, and other medical services are to the people of Kensington and Philadelphia at large.

Call your councilmember and urge them to vote AGAINST Bill #240665 (numbers listed in comments)

Donate to grassroots groups that are providing some of these life saving services in Kensington and around Philadelphia on a daily basis:
