Yesterday, I had the honour of getting photographed by the incredibly talented Tiffany for Miss Indigenous Canada. I am so grateful to be surrounded by such strong, inspiring, and creative women who continue to encourage me, uplift me, and help me feel confident throughout this journey. Our first day of orientation is complete, and holy moly, the gifts! I am feeling so incredibly grateful and overwhelmed in the best possible way. Niawen’kó:wa to the Miss Indigenous Canada team for welcoming us so warmly and for all the beautiful gifts.What made it even more special was that the delegates also brought gifts from their own communities to share with one another. Each gift carried a story, a piece of someone’s home, and so much thought and generosity. It was such a beautiful way to begin connecting and learning about the many Nations and communities represented here.We are only on the first day, and I already feel so honoured to be surrounded by these amazing Indigenous women. This is definitely not my usual content, but this year I made a promise to myself that I would grow, challenge myself, and step outside of my comfort zone in more ways than one. Competing in Miss Indigenous Canada is something completely new for me, and while it is exciting, it is also a little intimidating. But I know that growth often begins when we are willing to do the things that scare us.I have officially arrived in Six Nations, and I cannot wait to see what this week has in store. I am looking forward to learning more about myself, sharing my culture and community, and connecting with all of the incredible Indigenous women participating alongside me. Every woman/FemX/Two-spirited person here carries their own story, teachings, talents, and reasons for being here, and I feel so grateful to have the opportunity to learn from them.Follow along as I take on this new journey, try something completely different, and hopefully become a stronger and more confident version of myself along the way. I had this absolutely beautiful corset made by @bitterwaterforredhouse and I am honestly still in awe.At first, I told myself this was going to stay tucked away as a potential wedding piece, something special, something sacred, something for later. But once I saw it, there was no way I could keep this beauty sitting in a box. It needed to be shared with the world.The detail, the shape, the creativity, the love in this piece everything about it is stunning. I can’t wait to pass it on to the next generation too. Secretly building my fashion closet with them in mind. @bitterwaterforredhouse is truly one of the most brilliant artists I have ever had the honour of working with. Her work speaks for itself, but the spirit behind it makes it even more special. With the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples coming up in Geneva, and AI becoming such a major topic globally, I thought it was important to open up a small conversation around it.These are just my thoughts, nothing concrete, and I am always open to learning, being challenged, and hearing different perspectives. AI raises so many questions for Indigenous Peoples around language, culture, data sovereignty, consent, environmental responsibility, and who ultimately benefits from these technologies.Looking forward to the discussions ahead and if you’re heading to Geneva this year, hit me up. Being at the United Nations has been a really meaningful experience for me. It has allowed me to learn, grow, travel, and meet so many people who care deeply about our future and our communities. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to be in those spaces and to represent where I come from in whatever ways I can.At the same time, I don’t think the United Nations is the end goal.It is important that Indigenous peoples are present in those rooms, speaking up, sharing knowledge, and building connections. But I’ve also come to realize that some of the most important work happens much closer to home. It happens in community, through grassroots initiatives, through language revitalization, youth programs, environmental work, and people showing up for one another every day.Those international spaces matter, but real change starts with community. That’s where relationships are built, where people care for the land, and where movements truly begin.I’m thankful for the chance to experience both worlds and to keep learning from them. 🪶🌍💕✨ by @sage_badleaf
