Biography:
Chris Campe is a designer and writer in Hamburg, Germany. She writes texts and gives them a visual form with hand-drawn, expressive letterforms. With her experimental lettering and self-initiated text-based projects, she puts her experience of the world into words for others to see themselves reflected.

After studying illustration in Hamburg and Paris, she received a Fulbright grant to earn her Master’s degree in Visual and Critical Studies at SAIC.

Chris’ work has won awards from the Type Directors Club in New York, the Society of Typographic Arts of Chicago, and the Art Directors Club Germany. Most of her seven books are about lettering and type design. She also co-founded the Berlin Letters Festival, teaches at art schools, and speaks at events internationally.

Take a look at typefaces created in Professor Mary Jo Krysinski's Type Design & Lettering course from this past spring semester! This course will be offered again in Spring 2027.

VISCOM 3311: This course is for students who want to learn the technical skills necessary to design a font that can be used in a professional setting, and with the software tools used by graphic designers. Students learn about the history of type design, and explore various methods of letterform drawing, learning the minute details and characteristics required for legibility. This is used as a basis for experimenting with different styles of letterforms to create their own font, and learn how to use the necessary software to publish their font for commercial use. Students produce one complete font design by the end of the semester.

Presenting… NATURES
A display of student work from two VCD courses:

Image Studio VCD2002
Instructor: Don Pollack (Professor, Adjunct)

The final designed graphic in this course utilizes hand drawn and digital constructions from Nature in order to develop a visual metaphor for a short story by Jorge Luis Borges.

Advanced Scientific Illustration VCD4921
Instructors: Jen Lobo (Lecturer), Don Pollack (Professor, Adjunct)

Focusing on guided drawing from specimens in the Field Museum and classroom, form, value, and shadow were studied and final paintings were rendered. The images were then placed into an info-graph designed format including information rich text researched from each species.

Thank you to those who joined Heavy Cardboard to see all the teams’ incredible projects that have been developed, prototyped, and play tested over the course of this Spring semester.
