“During your Open Studio Night explorations, visit 33 E Washington LL2-20 (Lower Level 2, Crit Space) to spend time with “From The Bookshelf: Lineages of Thought.”

This exhibition pairs artwork with books, journals, magazines, quotes, and more, from the artist’s collections. The artwork in “From The Bookshelf: Lineages of Thought” asserts that the creative process is not completed in isolation but rather in conversation with a network of scholars, thinkers, and image-makers. Altogether, the exhibition constructs a living archive of knowledge production within the creative process.

While you are exploring all the studios, don't forget to peek at Sharp 1219, where we have a curated show just FOR YOU.

FOR YOU considers works where the encounter between the artwork and the viewer is an essential part of the work itself. The show explores how artworks can create situations of exchange, confrontation, intimacy and uncertainty, with works that ask what happens when encountering an artwork is an active, reciprocal, or even transformative experience.

The show is on:

Friday 10/16 6:00-7:30PM
Saturday 10/17 4:30-6:00PM by @saicopenstudionight

“Is this land made for you and me?”

Inspired by Woody Guthrie’s 1940 folk song “This Land Is Your Land,” the Open Studio Night exhibition Your Land / My Land brings together SAIC artists Luisé Cisneros, Changeun Cheddar Cho, Gray Davidson, Callie Elms, Jada Harris, Maggie Martin, Francisca Jiménez Ortegate, Zach Robinson, and Nia Wilson.

Through their work, these artists reflect on the environmental and spiritual meanings of land, alongside the personal, political, and cultural significance of the places we occupy.

Though often remembered as a patriotic anthem, Guthrie’s song also critiques inequality across the United States. As we mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, its questions of resistance, representation, and belonging feel more urgent than ever. This exhibition explores what it means to claim a place, and who has the privilege to belong.

ON VIEW AT SAIC GALLERIES
📅 October 16 | 8–10 PM
📅 October 17 | 2–4 PM
📍 33 E. Washington St., LL2-31, Chicago

Join us for the group-curated show during Open Studio Night 2026!

Haptic Feedback is curated by Soo Kim, Helena Rodriguez, and Jonah Sanderson and presents paintings and sculptures that evoke a desire for touch in their vibrancy and texture. Artworks in the group exhibition involve creative labor and ask the audience to imagine how the objects feel based on their appearance. Both figurative and abstract approaches inhabit a boundary between vision and a response from touch or scent.

Participating Artists: Isabel Sorrells, Ruby Howell, Chloe Macaulay, Lauria Rodea, Kirsten Lofgren, Debra Couch, Won Ji Lim, Nina Sun, HaeJung Lee, and Emilie Dashe

As artificial intelligence increasingly reproduces gestures, patterns, and artistic styles, what remains distinctly human within abstraction?

Join us for Human Trace, a group exhibition bringing together ten artists across diverse media to explore how memory, cultural identity, emotion, and bodily experience become embedded in abstract forms. Through gestures, material experimentation, and intuitive processes, the exhibition invites viewers to look beyond the visual language of abstraction and consider the personal experiences, memories, and human encounters that shape each artwork.

Join us for the opening of FLIPSIDE, curated by Jonah Sanderson (@jonah.a.sand), at Open Studio Night 2026!

FLIPSIDE explores cultural production through themes of criticism, adaptation, and betrayal. The group exhibition of thirteen artists deconstructs traditional notions of identity and investigates the recesses of memory from global diasporic perspectives. These viewpoints from SAIC’s MFA/MA artists subvert expectations and embrace change to challenge dominant modes of thinking and creating.
