Introducing Deyi (Evelyn) Zeng (@evezdy415 ), our next featured second-year MFA Photography student.

Deyi (Evelyn) Zeng (b. 2003) is a Chinese visual artist from Beijing based in Chicago. She received her BA in Media Arts Production from Emerson College and is pursuing an MFA in Photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Through photography, installation, and archival materials, she examines how illness and migration affect a person’s sense of identity and home. Her work imagines a time before memory takes shape, when experiences the mind cannot recall may already have left their traces in the body.

Her work has been exhibited at Heaven Gallery and the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago, the University of Arkansas School of Art in Fayetteville, Echo & Frame Art Space in Shanghai, and Beijing’s 798 Art District. by @saicphotography

2nd Year Grad Feature: Yunan Xiang✨ @yyunaax13

Yunan Xiang is a Chicago-based photographer and interdisciplinary artist pursuing an MFA in Fine Art Photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work engages with social and political issues, examining how systems of power shape collective memory, public narratives, and individual experience. Working across photography, archives, and mixed media, she is particularly interested in the circulation and manipulation of information, and in the tensions between personal memory and larger social histories. by @saicphotography

TONIGHT!!!

Join us Monday, September 14 for a free public lecture by artist Catherine Opie!

September 14, 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Fullerton Hall at the Art Institute of Chicago,

For more than 30 years, Catherine Opie has captured often overlooked aspects of contemporary American life and culture. One of the most important photographers of her generation, her photographic subjects have included early seminal portraits of the LGBTQ+ community, the architecture of Los Angeles’ freeway system, mansions in Beverly Hills, Midwestern icehouses, high school football players, California surfers, abstract landscapes of National Parks, and the Bel-Air residence of Elizabeth Taylor, among others. In 2018 Opie debuted her first film, The Modernist, a dystopic view of Los Angeles, a city that has figured prominently in her work over the years. Her complex and diverse body of work is political, personal, and highly aesthetic-the formal, conceptual, and documentary are always at play.

A look back at Sensitivity & Exposure this summer☀️

Students moved between photography and printmaking, experimenting with photogravure, alternative photographic processes, sensitized surfaces, and a range of substrate. Through process tests, proofs, and material experimentation, the course became a testing ground for developing new approaches to imagemaking. Led by Frances Lightbound and Monika Niwelinska, the course culminated in self-directed projects bringing together the processes and ideas explored throughout the session. by @saicphotography

Inside/Out: Photosynthesis ☀️🌿

Students in Sara Condo’s summer intensive explored photography through site visits, garden-based research, and experimental printing processes. From learning about garden design with horticulturist Kristian Brooks and conversation with Nate of Gardeneers to creating prints in community spaces, the course connected image-making with ecology, public space, and material experimentation. by @saicphotography

We gathered in SAIC Galleries to celebrate our graduating Photo Grads and their extraordinary culminating exhibition — a powerful moment marking the end of another unforgettable school year.

Surrounded by alumni, faculty, staff, family, friends, and continuing students, we spent time with ambitious, deeply thoughtful work reflecting the incredible range of ideas, experiments, collaborations, and commitments shaping our community this year.

We also celebrated a beautiful new publication guest curated by Pia Singh and designed by Riesling Dong, capturing and honoring the wide spectrum of artwork created across the department this past year with such care and sensitivity. Alongside it, we exchanged our annual department portfolio — keeping this meaningful tradition alive across so many years.

These gatherings remind us how much can happen when artists work alongside one another over time, conversations, risks, transformations, friendships, and the building of a deeply connected creative community.

So much hard work, generosity, imagination, and mutual support brought us to this moment. The SAIC Photo community continues to inspire us every day.

Congratulations to our graduating students — we are so excited to see where your work takes you!

many thanks to @kylesdunn for sharing your photos

💛wishing everyone a lovely summer💛 taken in SAIC PHOTO by @saicphotography
