On Friday 10th July, I’ll be in conversation with the brilliant Lynnée Denise (@lynneedenise) for a listening session and album art analysis at the Barbican - as part of the Project A Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica exhibition, curated by @tobikyere

Co-organised by the Art Institute of Chicago, MACBA Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona and KANAL-Centre Pompidou Bruxelles.

In this session we will examine album covers and music that have shaped movements - going deep into the artwork, the sound and the politics.

Lynnée Denise is a writer, interdisciplinary artist and global practitioner of sound, language and Black Atlantic thought. In 2013, Lynnée coined the term DJ Scholarship, shifting the role of the DJ from party purveyor to archivist and cultural worker (!)

Founding Studio Sula (@studio___sula) has given my work as a DJ, researcher and archivist a home - a place to document and share my ongoing research into rare books, records and music ephemera.

Tickets include access to view the Project A Black Planet exhibition from 6–8pm before the session begins at 8:30pm. Link in bio!

a few records / dubplates from my great grandfathers record collection ~ 100% my longest running archival project. giving thanks always to my grandad who gave me his collection many years ago..

Known as “King Tooth” pronounced ‘Toot’, my great grandfather operated soundsystems in the 50s & 60s in Kings Lawn, Kingston, Jamaica…most of the labels on his records were soaked off or scratched out by him, he also wrote KT all over them…some belonged to my great grandmother Daisy too (pictured)

some other records in his collection were bought when they moved to Fulham, London in the 60s and held blues parties.. a small selection here but there’s many records from labels like African museum, Coxsone, Wolf, Gibbs, Ackee, Love, Crazy Joe, Duke Reid, Mor Well, Faith, Safari, Bun Gem, Blue Cat, Orchid, Supertones ++

used to archive these on @high____energy until I forgot the password, still… researching, archiving, listening and identifying some gems.. gratitude always, foundational 🙏🏾
