The sun had set for my nana the 12th of this month and it’s been a hard one to sit with. Our time up north was most memorable from the times staying over at nana and papa’s house, swinging on the tire swing, playing card games, watching tv, and looking through nana’s water color studio. She was a staple of my youth, as a majority of grandma’s are.

But before us, she was born in Detroit and had moved around a lot until they made there way up to northern Michigan, where she was raised on farms. She had a pet pig and a pet chicken growing up. She went to a one room school house from kindergarten up until 8th grade. She had met my papa in Mancelona at a dance; she was 18, he was 19. After 6 months they married and that’s when their family (my dad’s family) had started and she had slowly over time became the family matriarch. With 5 children, many grand and great grand children, nieces, nephews, and every child in between the roots had trickled down.

I wouldn’t be me (or alive) without my father, and he without his mother. For that I am grateful that I had you for a good amount of my life. Dad said you were gonna outlive us all, and at 97 you had a good run for it. I’m rambling while sitting in a parking lot at 2am and I wish I could convey more of your life in one post. But anyway, I’ll miss you nana. I don’t know what happens when we’re gone, but I like to think that our loved ones that pass before us are waiting there, in a familiar place, waving and welcoming to the next journey. I hope papa, aunt peg, and dad were there to welcome you home. Until I see you again. by @saigoncita
