DEWA ALIT & GAMELAN SALUKAT - a rehearsal in Bali
~~~ watch on YOUTUBE / link in bio ~~~
« December 2011. It’s my first time on the “Island of the Gods”, am blown away like any first visitors by the general beauty, and I make a film, only one - with the celebrated I Made Subandi, one of the greatest gamelan composer of its generation.
November 2025. My second time in Bali, and things have changed a lot - tourism has exploded, Subandi has passed away (way too young) and music has evolved in some radical directions, beyond the tourist traps and horrendous luxury resorts.
For the past ten years or so, a name has been changing the game of Gamelan based music - Dewa Alit, a unique composer based in Ubud, who has already been traveling the world a few times with his ensemble Gamelan Salukat.
During the short time I am in Bali, he is rehearsing his new piece “Sukat Tacala” with his ensemble, regularly at home in Ubud. Unexpectedly, he allows me to pass by one night, accompanied by local friend Max who has been guiding me all around. The moment is delicate and subtle, and I am not thinking about recording anything - this is unreleased music after all.
But we got entranced. The piece, around 16min long, is stunning, going thru peaks and valleys of sonic landscapes. After two entire takes, I allow myself to record it entirely - even though Alit told me to only record one minute length. “It’s for the archives” I keep telling myself.
Two weeks ago, the final piece got released on Bandcamp - accompanied on disc by the piano of Sri Hanuraga in a completely different version- and I drop an email to Alit, suggesting maybe we could offer this Balinese rehearsal recording.
He accepts kindly, and here it is - a rare look inside the factory of one of contemporary grandmasters of music, and his Gamelan Salukat ensemble. »
Coming soon! The release date for Dewa Alit & Gamelan Salukat’s new album “Baur Bentur” from Black Truffle is now officially announced, and it’s June 19th!
The album comes with two of Dewa Alit’s new compositions for Gamelan Salukat and a piano.
But it’s probably a bit different from what most of you expect, as our pianist Sri Hanuraga himself says in his article for Kompas media:
“The first time I read the score while listening to the MIDI demo, I thought it was some kind of piano concerto. But from the very first rehearsal, it was clear that no single facade dominated either in terms of timbre or melody. As Stiegler’s concept of economy of contribution suggests, there’s no hierarchy. Everything blends together, even in the second movement, when the complexity reaches its peak. Independent melodic cells blend and clash, without dominating.” by @saihmiring
In Siklus Mov. 2, composer Dewa Alit translates this concept of Siklus into a living sonic architecture. The composition moves away from literal representation, instead converting the mathematical precision of these cycles into a sequence of shifting sound colors and natural dynamics. By grounding the composition in the rigorous logic of the Balinese calendar, Dewa Alit avoids the traps of exoticization. Instead, he presents a sonic system that is as intellectually demanding as it is spiritually resonant.
