Henri Lloyd have released the next generation of their Shadow Boot. This version comes in a waterproof full-leather design and a stretch panel in the back to accommodate for a variety of calf sizes. Pull loops on the top simplify donning. Are Henri Lloyd finally catching up on Dubarry and Musto with this version? Personally we would have loved to see a version with integrated gaiters. The LOOP EF1500 is an electric furler designed to make the furling of gennakers and code zeros easier on small boats up to 28 feet. It mounts at the front of a bowsprit and can be used with both torsional ropes and furling drums. It's powered by a 12V rechargeable Li-ion battery (very similar to a cordless combi drill) and controlled by a wireless remote. The battery is dimensioned to provide 1 hour of continuous operation on a single charge delivering up to 30 Nm of torque at 525 rpm. There is also an option to connect the unit to the boats main 12V system, which should save a bit of unwanted weight in the bow. The unit weighs 2.8 kg including the battery and has a safe working load of 750 kg. See them at the Kohlhoff stand (07.216) at METS next month.

The Ropeye GripJammer is based on the constrictor principle, probably making it the most advanced "chinese finger trap" ever made. Thanks to a clever use of the spring, it's more compact and doesn't need the long sock typically associated with a constrictor. Not much tech data available yet, but the version in the pic will take 8-10mm rope. 5-8mm and 10-14mm versions will follow. This week's #sailinglegend is Denmark's greatest sportsman in history, Paul Elvstrøm. The "Mozart of Sailing" is by many considered the greatest sailor of them all. In his truly unique sailing career Elvstrøm won 4 Olympic gold medals, sailing Firefly at the London games 1948, then Finn in Helsinki 1952, Melbourne 1956 and Rome 1960, making him the first Olympian ever to win gold medals in four different Olympic Games. In addition to his Olympic medals, Elvstrøm also won 13 world championships and seven European Championships in different classes such as 5.5 Metre, 505, Finn, Flying Dutchman, Snipe, Soling, Star and Tornado. Elvstrøm was renowned for his great sportsmanship on the race course. He made the saying "If in the process of winning, you have lost the respect of your competitors, you have won nothing." his signature. The legendary Dane not only excelled on the race course; Elvstrøm's books on racing rules where considered the bible for any racing sailor for decades. He invented the Elvstrøm self-bailer which is still found on several Olympic boats and Elvstrøm Sails (founded by Paul Elvstrøm in 1954) are still manufacturing cutting edge sails. Paul Elvstrøm was born 25 February 1928 in Hellerup, Denmark and died in his hometown last year on 7 December at the age of 88. He will forever be remembered as the true hero and role model by many generations of younger sailors. What is your best memory of Paul Elvstrøm?

The MOB1 is a new MOB alarm developed by UK company Ocean Signal. Just like any other GPS equipped MOB alarm, the MOB1 sends out its GPS position to surrounding vessels via AIS.
What makes the MOB1 stand out is it's ability to be paired with your vessel's VHF (using the MMSI number of your vessel). When activated it transmits a DSC signal directly to your VHF. As it can take minutes before the first GPS coordinates are transmitted via AIS, this DSC functionality (which is instant) can save valuable time, especially if the rest of your crew is asleep/below deck and hence do not witness the MOB situation as it happens.
On top of this feature, according to the manufacturer, the MOB1 is also 30% smaller than conventional MOB alarms on the market.
The device will fit on a lifejacket's oral tube and will automatically activate when the lifejacket inflates by using an activation tape that encompasses the bladder.
Keep in mind: A MOB alarm relies on your crew and/or nearby vessels to pick up the alarm signal and come to the rescue. The Air Only ventilators have been around for a while but Sailing Gear believes they deserve more attention. A genius design that keeps the water out, even with heaps of green water on deck. As soon as water hits the ventilator, soft yellow PVC balls float up along vertical guides and form a watertight seal. As soon as the water subsides, the balls descend, letting air in again. Works even if 100% submerged. Can be combined with dorade boxes and comes in both scoop and mushroom versions. Many new @hallbergrassy yachts seem to be equipped with the Air Only. This week's #sailinglegend is the New Zealand-born Dame Naomi James who in 1978 became the first woman to have sailed single-handed around the world via Cape Horn. Sailing the Gallant 53 "Express Crusader" the 29 year old left Dartmouth in Devon on 9 September 1977 and made the circumnavigation in just 272 days, thereby beating Sir Francis Chichester’s round-the-world sailing record by two days. SWIPE for more images! The Lume-On by @spinlockhq is probably the best bang-for-the-buck marine safety product of this decade. The Lume-On can be retrofitted to any inflatable lifejacket and once you hit the water it illuminates the whole of the lifejacket bladder. The bladder acts as a diffuser to maximise the visibility of the flashing light.
