After several long, arduous months of toiling over the idea of finishing TERA, we have decided to move forward with the purchase of another boat. We are officially the proud owners of this beauty: a 1986 Lord Nelson 35, “Penrose!” She actually has an overall length of 41’ and drafts 5’6”. She is also quite spacious inside and sails like a dream!! 😍
So with all that said, we will be staying in Connecticut for a few more days before driving back to NC to put TERA up for sale and to move our belongings up to Connecticut. Here, our journey will begin with sailing around the Northeastern United States for the summer. Then, we will eventually head south, hopping down the coast, visiting friends and family.

When your boat grill has more than one purpose...
A mama bird has made a nest in our unused grill, and the male bird provides food to her multiple times a day. We are not quite sure, but it appears to be some type of Sparrow. Can anyone help identify this lovely bird? taken in New Bern, North Carolina by @sailingvesseltera

Sanding. “Glorious” sanding! So much sanding to do to prep the hull and bottom for painting. We are removing and repairing hull blisters and impact damage, smoothing the bottom from stripping off the fiberglass and prepping for laying up more fiberglass on the bottom. This definitely is our biggest project thus far. She is going to be a real beauty when we finish though! We can’t wait!!

Candid shot of me grinding out impact damage on the hull. Yea, Joe is a little sneaky with his phone. Works to my advantage though - this is proof that I do work on our boat!! 😆

Right now, we are finishing up with sanding the bottom and grinding out the damage to the hull. Our next step will be to fill all of the crevices with fiberglass and thickened epoxy resin, fair and smooth the epoxy, fiberglass the bottom, and then, paint the entire hull. We will be going with a color for the hull, but you have to wait to find out what color we have chosen!! 😉 Stay tuned...

A beautiful #throwback to September 2018, when #svtera was anchored down in the creek for Hurricane Florence. The calm after the storm. She did so well! Not one drop of rain in the cabin, and she did not drag anchor either with two anchors out.

Five years ago today, we bought this beautiful girl! A 1982 Cherubini-designed Hunter 37c. My, the projects we have completed on her since then, turning her into one amazing boat! With more projects to come, our refit will be complete before the end of this year. Thank you for sharing our journey for the past 5 years!! And stay tuned. There is more to come...

PROGRESS UPDATE: SV TERA
So, it has been a while since we shared some progress updates. We have been busy tackling 3 projects at the same time while TERA is hauled out on land!

We recently had to sister in a new keel bolt, since the one furthest aft in the bilge was corroded underneath the nut and into the threading. Joe decided to use a 15-inch, silicon bronze rod, threaded on both ends, to create a new keel bolt, so he had one fabricated. He drilled a 3/4 inch hole into the lead keel from inside the aft portion of the bilge. He used a 3/4 inch ship’s auger to actually drill the hole. After the hole was made, he poured water into the hole in order to find the vertical hole from outside. He then drilled very tiny holes into the port side of the keel, approximately the same depth as the rod in order to locate the hole. He discovered that he was slightly off in locating the vertical hole, as we found out later that the rod slanted forward, so he decided after several attempts to drill a bit more forward from the other holes and finally “struck gold,” or should I say “water!”

Joe then drilled and chiseled a hole big enough to get a wrench into the hole to secure the nut and washers onto the rod, approximately 3x3x2 inches. We then test fit the rod and determined that the rod needed to go deeper into the lead keel. So, we drilled a deeper hole to accommodate the rod fully.

When we were ready to secure the silicon bronze rod with the nuts and washers, I was inside the bilge and Joe was outside at the keel securing each respective nut to the bolt. Joe had applied some Life-Calk to the bilge nuts and washers in the bilge to prevent water from leaking into the new keel bolt shaft. After securing the nuts to the rod, Joe torqued the nuts to specification.

We allowed the Life-Calk to cure over the course of 2 days, and in the meantime, we injected Flexpoxy into the hole in the side of the keel to prevent water from making contact with the rod and to finish smoothIng out the keel.

The final photo shows the epoxy filling. This can now be sanded and painted when we are ready to paint the keel and hull! But we will save that for another progress update! by @sailingvesseltera
