Male calves mean nothing to the dairy industry. The second a cow gives birth, the calf’s gender is checked. If it’s a boy, he’s taken away immediately. He’ll never produce milk, so what’s the point of keeping him?

The mother, who carried him in her womb for nine long months, doesn’t even get a chance to feed him, lick him, cuddle him, or look at him properly. She cries and cries for her baby, but no one listens. Her son is dragged away like he’s just an object.

And the calf? He has no idea what’s happening. One moment he’s in the warmth of the womb, the next he’s tied up alone in the cold. He feels hungry, he craves the milk that belongs to him, but he’ll never get it. Why would the industry “waste” milk on him when they can sell it to humans? To them, he’s nothing more than a byproduct, destined to be cut into pieces and sold as meat.

If the calf is a girl, she isn’t any luckier. She’ll grow up only to be forced through the same torture as her mother. Pregnant again and again, her babies stolen, her milk stolen. This is what dairy looks like, everywhere in the world. It is the exploitation of motherhood itself.

Calf 269 is proof of this system. He was a gentle, white-headed boy born near Tel Aviv. His ear carried the number 269, a tag marking him for slaughter in June 2013. Just days before his scheduled death, activists rescued him. His story spread across the world, sparking protests that reminded people that every piece of meat once belonged to someone who wanted to live.

When I wear this ear tag, I wear it for him, and for all the others who never got rescued. I wear it in solidarity with every farmed animal. Their lives are not ours to take. Their bodies are not ours to use. Their freedom is their birthright.

On Saturday, 5th September 2026, there’s going to be the first-ever Animal Liberation March in Mysore, Karnataka.

If you’re someone who believes animals deserve respect and deserve to be represented, be there. Injustice doesn’t end unless we fight against it.

Let’s show the world that there’s a section of this society that is pro-justice, anti-oppression, and fighting for the most oppressed group on the planet: non-human animals.

Be in Mysore. Be their voice. Let’s show up in huge numbers, stand up for them, and make history.

The march begins at 3:30 p.m. at the DC Office Mysuru and will end at Mysore Town Hall.
