These images do not do Isomaru Suisan justice.

For our first dinner back in Tokyo, we went straight to one of my favorite spots.

We ordered salt-grilled mackerel, getamori sashimi, aji sashimi, fried oysters, tuna with green onions, and a grilled eel bowl. Washed it all down with two types of sake and a beer.

Amanda ordered this mysterious green drink that we still can’t figure out.

It was the perfect first meal to kick off our honeymoon in Japan.

Amanda and I decided to go to Japan for our honeymoon—8 months after our wedding. Life has kept us both busy, but we finally found the time to celebrate. At first, we weren’t sure where we’d go. We talked about Colorado, then Canada, then back to Colorado—until one day, Amanda said, “Japan.”

We had originally planned to visit Japan together last year as part of a group trip. Amanda knew how much it meant to me and even helped set everything up. But as the trip got closer, we realized Amanda wouldn’t be able to go due to work. She encouraged me to go without her—and I’ll always be grateful for her support.

That trip held special meaning for us. I had secretly planned to propose in one of the cities we were visiting and had even booked a photographer to capture the moment. I proposed to her on her birthday—and she said yes. The rest, as they say, is a beautiful story.

Now, everything came full circle. Amanda finally made it to Japan—this time as my wife.

We arrived in Japan around 6 PM and took the subway to Akihabara. We stayed at Hotel Resol, right next to Yanagimori Shrine and just a bridge away from Electric Town.

After checking in and meeting the hotel’s adorable robot, Kumogi, we ate at Isomaru Suisan—one of my favorite spots in Tokyo. We spent the rest of the night exploring and soaking in everything Akihabara has to offer.

We started our morning traveling to Hakone, with our first stop being Owakudani — the volcanic valley of Hakone. It’s a popular tourist spot known for its active volcanic springs and sulfur vents. This is also the home of kuro-tamago (black eggs), which are said to add a few years to your life.

At this point in the trip, I had caught a cold and was desperate for anything that might help — so yes, I absolutely had one of those black eggs. (Spoiler: only the shell is black, sadly.)

After sightseeing, we made our way to the Hakone Shrine, home of the famous Torii of Peace. You have to climb a long flight of stairs to reach it, but it’s totally worth it. Near the shrine, there’s the Ryujin Suisha — a pair of dragon statues that pump out drinkable spring water. It was beautiful.

Hakone ended up being my favorite stop of the entire trip. I wish we had more time there. We stayed at a traditional-style Japanese inn where we slept on the floor — honestly, it was the best. And the view from our room looked out toward Mt. Fuji.

Dinner that night was one of the best meals of the trip, and we were even given traditional gowns to wear during our stay.
