Every World Cup, I sit in front of the TV and ask my husband the same questions: “So what’s offside?” “Why is that guy being so dramatic? he barely touched him.” “Wait, do any of these guys even play for big teams?” “Who’s in charge of designing their kits?” I don’t know the offside rule. But I know when a brand is offside. Launching before the strategy’s onside, chasing trends instead of building a system, dramatic rebrands with nothing behind them. Every brand has an opponent, and it’s rarely a competitor. It’s the stuff that erodes trust from the inside. Inconsistency that makes people unsure what you stand for. Generic messaging that sounds like everyone else in your category. A logo system with no strategy behind it, so it really means nothing under pressure. Chasing trends instead of building something that holds up past this quarter. A strong brand has the flashiest offence, AND knows exactly what it’s protecting. It builds a system disciplined enough to hold the line. Consistently, under pressure, over years. by @sakoodle
