We knew Nico before Cesarina was a thought. Back then he was a waiter at the restaurant we’d go to more nights than we’d admit. When he talked about the menu, you listened — the man knew exactly what he was serving and why. We weren’t customers to him. We were family that happened to eat there. We even had friendly back-and-forths about Napoli vs Roma. It was the kind of running joke that needs no real upkeep to stay warm — the memory of it is enough.

Cesarina opened in February 2019 in Point Loma, ventures started by Italian natives who’d clearly had enough of imitation Italian food and decided to fix it themselves. Nico named the place after his wife, Cesarina, the chef behind everything that comes out of that kitchen. It was a fitting choice. The whole idea behind the restaurant was built around her — an Italian matriarchy at the center of the trattoria, run the way a mother runs a house, everyone fed, everyone included. You feel that the second you walk in. We were regulars at the place he used to work. We are regulars here too, just prouder of it now.

The room he built is exactly him — the open pastificio in full view, dough worked by hand, nothing tucked away because nothing needs hiding, warmth in every corner of it. We ordered the Paccheri Vodka e Scampi, and it was the kind of dish that makes you put your fork down for a second just to look at it. The paccheri was cooked perfectly. The sauce had real depth and balance. The scampi tasted like it had been pulled from the water that morning. Nothing fancy about it, just the kind of dish that makes complicated food look simple.

What strikes me most is how little has actually changed. He still comes by the table. He still makes sure the wine is right. He is just doing it now as a man who built the room instead of one who was hired to stand in it, and somehow that hasn’t cost him a single ounce of the warmth that made us regulars of his in the first place.

Brava, Cesarina. And well done, old friend — we watched you set the table for everyone else long enough. It’s about time you got to keep one for yourself.
