PEABODY — The good times rolled at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School on Monday as professional BMX riders showed off their incredible bike flips and tricks for students — and spread messages of motivation, perseverance and kindness.

The show was put on by the @nohatetour, a program that travels to schools across the country to inspire students to follow their dreams and also treat others with kindness and respect.

Many of the athletes on the tour have won medals at the X Games, including Trevor Meyer and Zach Newman, who were both in Peabody Monday.

Speaking to all four grades at PVMHS, Newman shared how he had worked hard to become a BMX rider when he was in high school, even when other kids teased him for his pink helmet that he’d bought at a thrift store.

“Someone somewhere on your path may not understand what you want to do with your life,” Newman told the crowd. “But as long as what you’re doing is not hurting anyone, stick on your ride until your wheels fall off.”

Crowds filled the #Salem Maritime National Historical Park at Derby Wharf Saturday — undeterred by the heat wave — to celebrate the Fourth of July in Salem and mark the country’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The Tartan Army that invaded Boston for the World Cup also made a stronghold on the North Shore.

You might have noticed the traffic cones they’ve placed on Salem’s most well-known statues last week, a tradition for Scottish soccer — ahem, football — fans that spans back to Glasgow in the 1980s but looked like a new trend for witch hats on Samantha.

Maybe you’ve spotted groups of Scots in their kilts walking around town, or at least seen them in their blue and white jerseys. Glasgow resident Dennis Lynch proudly wore his jersey while he traded Scottish slang with a bouncer during a smoke break outside of O’Neill’s Pub on Washington Street Friday afternoon.

“I’ve been here since 11 o’clock this morning and I was the last to leave here last night,” Lynch laughed.

He’s been enjoying O’Neills’ stash of Magnus bourbon and planned to watch that evening’s matchup between Scotland and Morocco at the pub.

“You’re lovely people,” Lynch said. “We’re always made welcome, always.”

The Salem High champs were celebrated Saturday during a rainy, rolling rally and an indoor ceremony to a soggy but still excited group of fans and family.

The rolling rally consisted of student champions riding on several buses and trolleys, escorted by Salem police cruisers and motorcycles, and the Salem Fire Department. The parade started at Salem High School on Willson Street, then wound its way over to Derby Street and Hawthorne Boulevard before heading back to the field house for a ceremony in honor of the champions.

The celebration recognized this year’s Athletics and Performing Arts State Champions:

- Boys Basketball (MIAA Division 3 State Champions)

- Alexia Coleman (Wrestling: MIAA Division 2 132 pound State Champion)

- Grant Dwyer (Swimming: MIAA Division 2 200 IM & 500 Free State Champion)

- Salem HS Marching Band (NESBA Division 3 Champion & MICCA 5-Star Gold Medal Rating)

- Salem HS Jazz Ensemble (MAJE Gold Medal)

Dailin Martinez Rodriguez is well deserving of the free makeover she received from @maisonesthetiquespa ahead of her senior prom Tuesday night.

At Danvers High, she’s class president, a performer, leader of multiple organizations and in multiple national honor societies. But what stands out above all else is her kindness and drive to help others.

“It’s just great to have this moment to myself, to think about how much fun prom is without the stress of having to plan it,” she said, as two women styled her hair at the spa Tuesday afternoon. “I’ve never gotten pampered like this, so it’s great to have this experience. That’s exciting in itself.”

Juana Bencosme has been counting down the days to the first anniversary of when her 14-year-old son, Jason Bernard, took his own life.

“The date that’s coming, that’s going to be very painful,” she said from her couch on a rainy April day, around the time Jason should be coming home from school and plopping down by her side.

Each afternoon, the teen would sit with his mother in their living room and tell her about his classes and track practices — his friends, and also, his bullies.

Those afternoon chats ended on Friday, May 17, 2025, after those bullies escalated their harassment and told Jason, an eighth-grader, one of their high school boyfriends was going to beat him up that Monday.

Jason was gone by Saturday morning. But he still had one final request.

In a two-page letter, Jason told his family he was going to be all right. He wrote that when they saw something green, it would be him visiting. And he wanted his name remembered.

Jason’s Legacy Foundation aims to carry out that wish. Under the leadership of his older sister Cely Rosario, Jason’s loved ones have spearheaded a suicide prevention and anti-bullying movement in Peabody through the foundation over the last year.

“We really want to spread the message of being kind, but in that breath, we want to hold responsible parties accountable and have them take responsibility for their role — or lack thereof — in a child’s life,” Rosario said.

End of watch.

Hundreds of police officers lined Peabody and Salem streets this week for the funeral and wake of Massachusetts State Trooper Kevin Trainor.

Trainor, a 30-year-old trooper stationed out of the Danvers barracks, was killed in a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver on Route 1 in Lynnfield last week. Trainor was on his way home from his shift when he responded to a report of a car driving the wrong way on the roadway. The driver in the incident also died in the crash.
