Me 🤝 @kayaydrew books !! It comes as no surprise (literally, at all, not a single doubt was had) that I loved The Gravewood🙂‍↕️ Apocalyptic dread and blood-soaked yearning are imho the two main pillars of this book,, the real horror is less in the vampires and more in the way that the most vulnerable people are abandoned in the process and what they are forced to do in response, the isolation of those desperate decisions. People reduced to bodies and how helpful they can be to the ‘greater good’ so individual nuance is lost in the noise of survival, even when for some folks, it is survival. Kelly’s ability to articulate human experience in a way that’s both concise and beautiful will never not GAG me, bc the way I could identify with these characters in ways I would’ve never anticipated (not u Matt Donovan), I felt this book in my chEST! Although I’m very aware of the horror/social commentary/trauma relationship that exists in media, I don’t always get it,, THAT was nOT the case here!! The prose is so intentional and so evocative that you literally see the different pieces slotting in place with that ‘click’ as you read. The horror is delicious, the plot eats, but in the space where those two things get muddy and messy and bloody, it’s an absolute joy to read (even if the introspection it triggered made me *Rob Pattinson in the tracksuit meme*), I’ll never ever be over the way her mind works 😩 Shea & Lysander u will always be famous to meeeee 🥹 Also the Buffy Easter eggs wERE SO GOOD! There was one scene that was *sO* Spuffy I had to close the book😩 Anyways, need book2 YESTERDAY!! @penguinhuddlebooks I’m forever in your debt for this copy OHMYGOD, still shaking! P.S. all these quotes are from ch1, be gagged with me bc HELLO?! And the rest just compounds that standard!! P.P.S. Play Nice by @rachelharrisonsghost review🏚️🙂☕️ One thing about me I’m gonna eat up a literary horror esPECIALLY when Rachel Harrison writes it,, My dudes this was so freaking good I flew through it in a couple days and loved it!! It was so creepy and the horror DELIVERED I’m so impressed and also not surprised at all that she pulled this off 😮‍💨 It follows Clio as she goes back to her childhood home to try and renovate it for content (she’s an influencer) and while this is happening, she realises that the alleged demon may actually be real, oh and a lot of the memories from her childhood aren’t lining up the way they should once she starts digging into it. Insert a dramatised book her late mother wrote on the demon and its effects on their family, her parents’ tenuous relationship, an aunt who despises her dad, a sweet guy next door, and her sisters who have a whole load of issues of their own, and you get a great big mess 🥸 One of my absolute fave things about her books is the way the paranormal and the mc’s trauma get dealt with in tandem, it’s always written so so well, the two seemingly unrelated things are so tightly woven together that you can’t really tackle one without opening a can of worms for the other, and im once again, so impressed by the way that the demon was both villain and also not, like it was just doing what was in its nature to, and Clio’s meandering relationship with it was so interesting to read, how she sought it out and then ran from it etc. love love love !! Creepy almost child-like entities, haunted houses, ghostbuster types, family trauma and drama (the complexity of her d/evolving relationships was articulated so beautifully omg),, the whole pot,, i ate it up & can’t recommend it enough 🤭🤭 Thank you @titanbooks for this proof ily <33 OUT TOMORROW, UK (12th Sep) !! IT’S INTERNATIONAL TJC DAY !!!!!! 🐦‍⬛📜⚔️✨ Weeee happy arinsylvia day to all who celebrate 🙂‍↕️ The schedule for the day is three crash outs before breakfast and then a nap to recover, followed by tears and one more crash out, rounding off the day with pain and suffering and finally 15 hours of sleep 😛 (i jest! But only a little) I’ve spent the last few days tabbing (potentially over tabbing) and highlighting, and I started on the actual annotations yesterday- I’m realising it’s going to take me an age but I’m having the best freaking time!! I’m taking my time with the reread (it wasn’t supposed to be a reread but my kindle didn’t sync my annotations fully so I’ve gotta freestyle half of it so I’ve ended up committing to a full reread), and it’s proving a great choice! 😮‍💨 I wanted to add specific pages to this post but realised that my notes are pretty spoilery since I’m writing them with hands shackled by hindsight, so pls enjoy some cutie pages from the first five chapters 🤭 Noticing all the details and foreshadowing that went completely over my head the first time!! @shashemwrites had EVERYTHING absolutely EVERYTHING planned from mysteries budding in the first pages that unfold throughout, to the decision to switch “Sefa and Marek” (when asking where they are) to “Marek and Sefa” (when demanding they be brought in)- I’m AWED!! Bits n bobs from September 💫🤎🌾 Happy Sunday loves and lovettes,, this month has both flown by and also taken its sweet sweet time,, full of the most beautiful memories and some foul moments (12am chopping my 2 years worth of growth into a pixie,,, no regrets tho hehehe),, some book signings, good food, better company,, I’ve read some of my favourite books this month, I’ve also had some mega mega fLOPS,, alas, balance and all that,, excited to slow my reading down, focus on editing my WIP and reading more seasonally-spooky books (the mysteries of udolpho, brothers karamazov, dark is where the devil comes, the thief and the traitor bride, Innamorata etc etc),, Dead Beat is most certainly going to be my fave book of the month, coming up to the end of it this weekend and, I am SICK! With love for them,, Spent my bday week hanging out with best girls!!!!!! (All we do is eat,,) Chomping at the bit for my preorder that Cerise brought with her hehehehe THESE PERFUMES SMELL SOOOOO GOOD!! Had to buy two more bottles bc I use them dailyyyy (also the fact Alexandra recognised my name when I preordered,, IM SHAKING!!! Loving her horribly!! Can’t wait for book2!!) FAVE GIRL IN THE CUTEST SHOP!!! Bath did see us on the Jane Austen festival day,,, everyone in costume was soooo fun to see! (I have no pics bc I wasn’t abt to take pics of random strangers lol) Spotted a T Kingfisher in the wild,, Literally all we did was eat,, Was so cool to finally see Persephone books ehehe (I did in fact buy that cute lil red mug,, it’s perfect for a flat white mywahahaah) i *love* a themed bathroom,, Mr Dua Lipa ate down in that new romcom,, me & Cerise had the best time,, many many rounds of Uno while we waited for the train (apparently I’m bad at uno??? Or cerise is just bad at shuffling,,) Many!!!! Photo Booth strips were made!! Rachel Gillig is so funny in a chronically online way,,, spent the best evening with my fave girlies listening to all things Bartholomew et al. (And if the i in my name looks a bit like a j when she personalised my TKATM proof,,, I’m pretending I don’t see it,,) Me and the beach,,, long distance relationship fr Seriously,, all we did was eat,, by @salimateez

Last, current, next reads!!! I was worried for a second there, thought a slump was coming on but I’m doing some rereads and some highly anticipated reads and they’ve *revived* me!! My reading this month has been both very good and very underwhelming, I’ve ventured a little away from my physical tbr so I’m planning to realign my October tbr,, Also planning to slow down on the reading, get back to the Brothers Karmazov and also working on my WIP, I want to be done with both of those by the end of the year so I can pick up The Idiot and start working on the character-related edits for WIP (and hopefully get draft1 of my second project done),, Q~ what’re you reading rn?? Are you enjoying it?? 🏷️ #booksta #bookrecs #bookreview #booksbooksbooks #readmorebooks I absolutely adored both of these, Love, Theoretically is definitely my favourite Ali book, maybe not compared to Bride/Mate bc it feels weird to compare a contemporary with a paranormal romance but Jack is absolutely my fave MMC from her list 🥹🥹 their dynamic was EVERYTHING to me!! Kiss Slay Replay was SO GOOD! It was absurd and horrifying and so full of heart and love, it genuinely gave me nightmares (I was reading it at night alone right before bed so that might’ve had smn to do with it) but also made me feel so seen and hopeful,, gonna do a full review soon with all my fave lines bc there are so many good ones!! Dead Beat — no one look at me, I’m feeling insane. Hoping to finish this by the end of the week/month bc im annotating it SO heavily,, it’s taking me ages but I do love that I get to really take my time w faves!! Both A Lady’s Guide to Scandal and Grim Tidings (though both had BRILLIANT audio narrators) were so disappointing, especially because both had 5 stars preceding them in the series,, alas,, I’m hopeful for the next BK paranormal,, and will deffo be reading the new Sophie Irwin once my library gets the audio,, her narrators are GREAT!! Ninth House Reread !! Currently finishing up my Hell Bent reread so I can binge Dead Beat for the next two days while I’m home (my brother missed the postman today I fell to my knees at work,, tomorrow it is,,) I semi-annotated NH when I first read it (pen), and then highlighted when I did my reread, so it’s been really cool to see which passages I felt important enough to mark both times,, there are SO many, this book is gold,, but these are some of my faves 🥹🥹 And if most of them revolve around Danny,, mind ur business,,, I’m mourning,, and am also completely terrified to meet him proper for the first time,, gonna need Alex to lock tf in omg,, @lbardugo is a genius,, 🏷️ #ninthhouse #leighbardugo #darkacademia #bookrecs #booksta Any and all things revolving around the incident,, I don’t need to say anything,, you had to be there fr Never ever thought a snobby rich kid would endear himself to me but alas, he’s so tortured,, he’s charmed me fr Darlington’s family dynamics are some of my fave scenes, devastating but SO so well written, Shes an acTORRRRRR This man has never rested in his whole life and I really hope he gets a hug and a nap and also a forehead kiss in DB Yeuh Her relationship ghosts changing throughout the series has been fascinatinggggg to read!! Him living in her head and shes the one paying rent The line about wanting to grow old is so ArinSylvia coded Im siCKKKKK HEHHEEHHEHEE NOTHING I LOVE MORE THAN A SENTIENT HOUSE OMFGGGGG insane alex is my fave alex,, When we finally get the Hellie story— dont speak to me :( The running thing about her always being hungry,,, need my girl to catch a BREAK Right under this about the gates to heaven being shut for some but hell always being open,,, yeah Scared! Straight! IM SICK!!!! They are both so self serving and YET!!! And yet,,,, i genuinely cannot wait to see them on page together …. Off the Reservation 🦌🥤🏍️ Weeee another SGJ book that I, to the surprise of no one, LOVED!!! A road-trip possession story like none I’ve ever read before; Nate et al. Set out to retrieve the bones of a Blackfeet boy who was killed at the Carlisle boarding school and bring him back home. This takes them on a days long trip there-and-back where they accidentally pick up something rather foUL that they never intended to. This book was batshit in the best way, half literal and half floating somewhere between metaphor and hallucination, sometimes I found myself rereading passages multiple times to try and get my head around what I was looking at but the payoff was well worth it!! I think my favourite part, aside from Nate & Mooch’s characters, was Nate & Sebby’s relationship; the real love they had for each other and the way that persisted throughout *the horrors*, it was devastating and heartbreaking and so tenderly written!! I really appreciate that no detail or mention is without purpose, no matter if it’s a spooky doll or a little phone, the front tire of a bike or an ice pick that isn’t really an ice pick, beer cans or bibles, everything has relevance and everything ties together in truly impressive fashion ahem the exorcism???? The second one?? I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or be impressed— I was both, what a genius but also insane way to tie that in!! It makes for such a fab reading experience, just along for the ride and you get to see all the ways these seemingly innocuous things carry huge parts of the plot!! A lot of the dialogue around Nate’s being a ‘real Indian’ and doing XYZ to validate his cultural identity was written so well & was relatable in a way I hadn’t anticipated!! It’s always nice when you can connect to a book like that 😋 I can’t recommend this enough!! Is it better than TOGI? No,, but I fear that book might be impossible to top. That being said, this is Nate’s story and for what it is, it was fantastic!! And the ending??? Read Immortal Rose with Us 🥹🌹🍁 Me and Cerise doing our first buddy read in….? Forever?? And we absolutely ADORED IT!! @alexbracken has such an incredible skill with words, the yearning in this one— UNREAL!!! It’s a regency romance and a fantasy and so much more, it’s a book you make room for on the shelf, that will stick with you for many moons (I’m still thinking about them, honestly,, they’re just,,, always there 😭 especially with that ending omg???) Twists and betrayals, devastations and yearning and hope!!! So much hope!!! But also grim reality and self-sabotage, complex characters and all the baggage they come with. Conflicts that prevent the characters from finding PEACE AND QUIET!!! That feel insurmountable, but so many soft, quiet moments pocketed in between the main plot. Those I think were my fave, the way she’s written these achingly domestic, intimate, lovely moments- romantic and otherwise. Where class makes little difference, and people are just, people. People who love and care for each other to the point of destruction. I cannot wait for book2,,, maybe by the time that comes out I’ll have a coherent review for this one, this book is so intensely evocative, my review is more a feeling than what I can say about it. You just have to read it 🥹 I’m soooo excited for Cerise to come visit in a couple days (she’s bringing my signed US HB heheheheheheb and the perfumes heheheheheheh) 🏷️ #immortalrose #alexandrabracken #fantasybooks #booksta #bookreview Cerise’s review: This was SUCH A GOOD BOOK TO READ TOGETHER OMG! from page one we were hooked and invested! the magic of the perfumes and the scents for different emotions was so so cool like what!! i loved association the different scents (good or bad) and it added so much depth to the characters in the moment. it was like a 4D experience honestly. what a perfect magic system. viola and hugh had me truly on my knees. the slow burn was a SLOW BURNNN. seeing how much they burned for one another and working together despite their initial dislike for one another. it was like a perfume that at first sniff you think you don’t like it, but once it settles you suddenly have a change in heart by @salimateez

It’s August almost September which means: Mel & Salima’s oomfversary is upon us!! (Also it’s between both of our birthdays,, we love friends living the same life) These girls will be okay because we go another year of gabbing, yapping, and kekeing about our faves (which are more often than not, the same 😏),, Yall know that one oomf that has the exact same brain as you,, yeUH we have pretty much the same taste in books….. until we don’t…..🫪 and then it’s a lot of crashing out and trying not to laugh as the other struggles through ur fave scenes,, ANYWAYS!! Doing this post before our tastes merge completely…. Without further ado —> BOOKS WE LOVED!! It was honestly so hard to find books that we loved individually that the other hasn’t read/didn’t list bc we’ve practically got the same brain and therefore the same taste,, Tbh if we were to nitpick we’d probs have a tiny little sliver on each side for our individual faves and then a massive echoing void in the middle that, if you look at it long enough, it won’t look back but you will hear us yelling “EXXXXACTLYY” back and forth for eternity 😋 Where I lean towards classics and horror/gothic when I’m not reading fantasy, Mel steers towards the litfic and romance of it all, we love range! Also give us like, a year, and this entire diagram will merge into one bubble bc we’ll have read each other’s recs by then, damn the tbr! That or it’ll just be a big circle with Tessa Dare’s entire backlog LMAO In stormy weather…. I cannot emphasis strongly enough how much I do not recommend this book, much as Mel loved it. More specifically tho, the audiobook. If you gotta read it, to each their own, but the audiobook actually made me a victim. Whatever tf that mmc narrator was doing, need them to never be allowed in the studio or near a mic again oh my god it was FOUL,, respectfully. It was awful, I get chills thinking about it. The book itself was bad in an unremarkable way, I do think it was a *choice* to introduce us for the first time to the mmc while he’s perving on a younger waitress but…. I’ll pipe down for that Over to Mel: This is a very rare occurrence given a lot of the books I’m drawn towards now by @salimateez

Recent Fave Books (in no particular order)🥹🫶🏻💞 I’ve been slowing down a bit with my reading, wanting to have a bit more time to write and also to get through some bigger books; I realised I’ve spent most of the year on new releases so I’ve been wanting to pick up some of the sequels and older titles I’ve been meaning to get around to! That being said, this year has been particularly good for my rankings, picking favourites from each month has been so difficult omg,, but these are some of my recent faves both on audio and not,, ~ Good Spirits (I wasn’t sure I’d like these but after how much I adored FTC & ANBTY I had to read it!!) ~ In Case I Go Missing (I’ve been following this one since the cover reveal and it did NOT disappoint; one of my fave YA mysteries!!) ~ Rules for Ruin (Cerise has been telling me to read Mimi Matthews for years and I fiNALLY did, and now I’m locked in for life, I fear! My library needs to get the audio for book2 STAT) ~ I Was a Teenage Slasher (finished this a couple nights ago, one of my faves from this author, such a cool take on the slasher- did the whole ‘characters are aware of the genre they’re in’ so smoothly) ~Zofloya (one of the titles in my gothic stack, I enjoyed it!! The first third and last third more than the middle but still, chaotic and messy and unhinged in a really interesting way,,) ~ Immortal Rose (I’m currently in the depths of editing my and Cerise’s buddy read review post so that will be afoot sOON but i couldn’t make this list without including it eheheh) I have a feeling about some tbr books that’ll be added to this list soon, thief and the traitor bride, off the reservation, grim tidings, beast becomes her etc. P.S. just realising I didn’t include Knave in this,, I CANNOT BELIEVE— brb will be posting the full review for that one stat Q~ what’re your recent fave reads? 🏷️ #booksta #bookrecs #bookstagram #classics #fantasybooks by @salimateez

A Language of Dragons 🐉🔥📚 It has taken me an *age* to read this book,, despite @isabellaslittlelibrary_ telling me to countless times,, and omg!! It was SO GOOD!! I’m a firm believer in picking up titles when it feels right,, some books just need to marinate for a bit before the time is right,, a rushing it always puts me in a slump so here we are 😋 This was sUCH a unique take on dragons, I absolutely loved the complexities around their languages, the hatching process, the way they fit into society, the way they’re aLLOWED to fit and all the discussions around that were so brilliantly handled. Getting to see the fraying seam of this society as we encounter it at the start of the book, and unravelling it in time with the fmc. I loved Vivien’s character arc so much, it was so believable the way she went from fully believing the propaganda she grew up on, the way belief turned illogical and stubborn when she started to panic at her changing reality, and finally when she commits to doing what’s right. It was such a beautiful arc, I’m so impressed by the dialogue that happened around that particular part of her story. The found family is so dear to me, Marquis my love, Sophie completely endeared herself to me, Atlas ofc made for a really good introductory person to the rebellion while also being just a big ole sweetheart (they’re so doomed I’m SICK),, the whole gang was so fun to watch develop those dynamics for better and worse! I’m super excited to start book2, I’ve already borrowed the audio from my library hehehe the narrator for this one did such a phenomenal job I’m deffo going to continue the series on audio 😋 I’ve alr got the PB edition pr3ordered muahahah 🏷️ #alanguageofdragons #bookrecs #booksta #bookreview fantasybook by @salimateez

Maggie and Arthur’s Magic Moment ✨🌂🪾 THIS BOOK WAS SO MAGICAL,, as you may expect from the title but fr it was so refreshing and wonderfully romantic and I couldn’t get enough of these two 🥹 There was something really lovely about how contained this story was, limited to the boundaries of this little town and the university, it really lent to the bubble they were living in, the high stakes and the rising tension with the magical threat growing with each day,, I loved the magic system, honestly would love a whole series of stand-alones based in this world/university (plsplspls I need a Dahlia/Rory story nowwww),, I adored it and there feels like there’s still so much to explore and dig deeper into, the possibilities are endless! The romance itself was SO sweet, rivals to allies to lovers but lowkey they were meant to be we love soulmates!! I loved the timing difference, when each realised that the other was their person, and the thing that triggers those moments,, I loved it SO much it felt so organic, the timing was wonderfully executed, the banter was SO GOOD! I love that they had a common goal, they worked together, we got forced proximity and an increasingly frantic energy bc of the magic gone awry that lent to intense feelings but it always felt fully rooted in genuine friendship and connection not just stakes!! The balance was 10/10,, The atmosphere was maybe my fave part, the unnatural fog, the cold, and then the small steals of summer they get when they get further from the school, it was summer romance and dark academia all at once and it was SEAMLESS!!
