Making this video was part of my creative playground: the only rule was to have fun. No deadlines, no limitations - just keep experimenting till I land on something that feeds my soul.

*maybe that’s why it took me a year from first hearing the song to finishing the edit, but we don’t have to talk about that, it’s all about the process.

A dream I’ve been working toward is becoming real.

I’m so excited (and a little terrified) to share that I’ve been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Grant to spend the next six months in Georgia making a documentary about Georgian dance.

Still taking it all in ❤️

Turns out the real Cinderella story was my wedding heels finally giving up after nine years.

Thank you to @julie_casamonti for inviting my short film “Behind the Pose” to screen @casafilm_anthologies - being part of the night celebrating art, music and film, all supporting a creative space worth preserving, was incredibly special.

My shoes may not have made it to the ball, but thankfully I did. ✨

 A quietly devastating drama that peers beneath the polished surface of the fashion industry to reveal the vulnerability it so often conceals. 11 years in the city I now call home.

Lately I’ve been thinking about where home actually is: growing up in Russia as a Georgian was already a mind trick for my identity; then I added a whole new layer by moving to NYC at 21 and learning what the United States is actually all about (spoiler alert - it’s nothing like I imagined from the very well-branded movies).

In some ways, I never really felt like I truly belonged anywhere, which caused me a lot of discomfort. It still does, even though I’ve grown to love and appreciate every single culture that has shaped me.

However, the only roots that truly make me cry are Georgian: hearing Georgian language, music, watching Georgian films, - it truly speaks to my soul, as if calling me back home that I never had there. And it’s such a weird feeling, because having traveled to Georgia, I know I don’t actually want to live there, but I think it’s the elusive nature of my childhood memories speaking to me, from back when my grandparents were alive - reminding me of their warm essence that I grieve the most, recognizing it in anything and everything Georgian.

Russia never felt like home, I’ll just leave it at that. I hold a lot of anger towards it for rupturing my identity, for separating me from my family and friends, because even though the people I love live there - I couldn’t stand to stay there a second longer. I felt suffocated by the regime long before I could comprehend what I was experiencing. At 21, I didn’t know who I was, but I knew one thing: if I stayed there - I will never find out.

And now New York… New York just has this sense of freedom that for the first time made me feel ok about not knowing who I was just yet - I could just be. And over time, meeting people and building the community started to feel more like home.

I feel like I’m constantly living somewhere in between, with my childhood and family in Russia, my extended family and cultural roots in Georgia, and now being an American citizen living in the NYC bubble: sometimes this mix feels so fulfilling, while at other times - it’s the emptiest feeling in the world. taken in New York City by @sallylomi
