indiGO A State of Mind is not an exhibition about colour.
It is an exhibition about perspective.

Indigo is one of the oldest colours in human history. It has travelled across continents and entered many cultures, carrying stories through cloth for centuries.

It is the colour of labour and luxury, ritual and resistance, ancestry and innovation.

The exhibition invites everyone to consider indigo as a metaphor for transformation, migration, healing, spirituality and belonging. It asks what it means to inhabit indigo: not simply to wear it, but to think through it.

These textiles are by traditional textile practitioners. They explore how cloth conveys meaning, how fabric records history and how colour carries emotion, politics and place.

Selected textiles in the exhibition are available for acquisition.

Each one supports the artists who made the work and contributes to LAFA's programmes in the arts, education and community engagement.

When indigo leaves the cloth.

We brought its visual language onto the architecture, transforming columns and bricks into part of the exhibition experience.

What a beautiful day!

Our community children had the best time painting their own T-shirts, playing with colour and just letting their creativity flow.

Curator @sallysallying was right there with them, painting, sharing laughs and enjoying every moment.

With lots of creativity and beautiful energy in one room, we loved every minute of it.

The Cloth Is My Witness has come to a close.
Indigo A State of Mind is still on view until 7 January 2027.

We believe that engagement with art and culture begins with curiosity, experimentation and the freedom to create.

Our latest children’s session brought painting and wax print together, inviting our young participants to explore colour, pattern, texture and material while creating work of their own. The session also reflects LAFA’s evolving direction and our deeper exploration of textiles as a medium of artistic expression and cultural identity.

A special thank you to our curator @sallysallying and featured artist @kadiriwatsonstudio for generously sharing their time, guiding the children and helping create such a joyful and engaging experience.

At LAFA, we continue to create spaces where young minds can encounter art, experiment with materials and discover the possibilities of creativity.

The Cloth as My Witness is currently on view at LAFA until 27 September.

Our young community artists came to LAFA to paint on fabric using craft stamps and other creative techniques.

As the session unfolded, the stamps became just the beginning. They started exploring shapes, patterns and their own marks, creating something completely unexpected and wonderfully abstract.

Thank you to curator Sally @sallysallying for guiding the session and to featuring artists Nana Adjoa @nanaadjoaturkson for joining the children and encouraging their creative expression.

WHY ?
INDIGO A STATE OF MIND

A language in blue.

Indigo is more than a colour. It is a process of tying, folding, stitching, binding, resisting and dyeing. Layer by layer, each immersion reveals something different.

It asks for patience, embraces uncertainty and allows space for discovery and surprise.

THE CLOTH IS MY WITNESS

In Ghana, cloth bears witness to a life.

From birth to school, church, celebrations and ceremonies, cloth moves with us through the different chapters of our lives.

It is worn, created, transformed and reimagined. It carries our stories, rituals and experiences.

The cloth has seen it all.

“BLUE gold.”

A phrase that captures just a little of what makes indigo so extraordinary.

At indiGO A State of Mind, natural dyer and textile designer @ttdhoku_ reflects on the history, rarity and enduring magic of indigo and its place within textile practice today.

His words offer one perspective. The exhibition opens up many more.

Before the exhibition, before the title, before NTAMA, Beyond Cloth, there was work. Textile experiments that had been quietly gathering momentum , opening up new possibilities and leading us towards something we had not yet named.

The Cloth Is My Witness.

Because the cloth was there.

It has witnessed what was spoken and what was left unsaid. It has held our stories, our celebrations, our grief and our becoming.

It was there.
It saw.
And I swear by what it has seen.

This August, LAFA presents The Cloth Is My Witness, bringing together the work of Nana Adjoa Turkson, Aaron Kantamakloe, Kadiri Watson and Jonathan Darko, where cloth, pattern and material become languages of story, tradition and contemporary African expression.

Curated by Sally Eba Polley @sallysallying, with a film screening by Christian Saint & Melissa Rouillé.
