Flow is a work of collaborative listening: twenty-five segments of the River Lech, each entrusted to two international artists. Drawing on field recordings and satellite time-lapse footage, they translate the river’s physical presence into sound, tracing the currents, thresholds and quiet rhythms that bind a landscape to the people who live beside it.

Left Bank is the first compilation drawn from the project: one artist chosen for each segment, gathered here along the river’s hypothetical left bank, twenty-five distinct meditations that move, as the river does, from source to confluence. Each piece is both an artwork and a dataset, an intimate route back to nature for the listener, and a contribution to the scientific research shaping the river’s future.

Chthonic energies: hidden primal raw hidden ritualistic unconscious energies. Both destructive and creative. Subterranean. Depth and resonance. The liminal space between life and death. Order and chaos. Katabasis: a descent into the underworld. To search for the things that cannot be named. To pass from shadows to light. To go down is not to be lost. It is to be found and remade. I have been collecting and studying and researching these colonial postcards from Egypt for almost a decade now. They are part of my identity. As a ‘product’ of a colonial cross cultural interaction between Egypt and Britain/ Europe. I have always felt the women’s presences strongly. These cards are emblematic of a painful meeting of two worlds. Of my English mother and Egyptian father. And hidden from view are the many visual, physical and epistemic violences of colonisation. And yet these cards found in flea markets hold stories and secrets of our ancestors and our past. As both Egyptians and British, these stories matter. I’m looking forward to the next stage of editing of my book chapter on these postcards from Egypt and North Africa more widely. But first now I’m hugely grateful to @mirit_mikhail 🙏🏽🙏🏽 who translated several of these cards for this book which is on the wider topic of postcards and performance by several authors, and is being published in Canada, once all the editing rounds are complete. #egypt #cairo #portsaid #egyptianwomen 🩷 #archives by @salmacaller

Morphogenesis has struck a chord it seems and has sold out so we are making a couple more. DM if you’d like one. 🦋🪲🪵💚💛I created the original collage from vintage butterfly prints and other found materials, with brilliant inks of greens and earthy browns with a glitter of gold. Christian created the typography and the swirling green grey suminagashi papers. Our books are carefully hand sewn with French linen thread. Filled with Clairefontaine studio paper. For writers artists thinkers and dreamers. Morphogenesis comes from two Greek words meaning “shape” (morphe) and “creation” (genesis). It is a biological and natural process of change and shape formation. Also a creative process of transformation from shapelessness to form. Something that happens in the deep forest or the glade .. by @salmacaller

Yesterday I finally submitted my chapter for an academic book on postcards coming out in Canada. I have been working on it for several months. Drawing on my research and arts council funded project #makingthepostcardwomensimaginarium It has taken me back down the rabbit hole of colonial orientalist visual and epistemic violence and all the connected ‘real world’ violences that lie beneath each image of a North African woman on a postcard.
